Duplicate social security number?

So a few days ago my friend's DirecTV stopped working, he calls them up and they tell him there's been fraud detected on his account.

Long story short then, he's told that there's someone else out there, in this world (not with DirecTV but found through the SS# database)--with the same social security number as him, and, this other person is much older than him.

Has anyone ever encountered such a situation? Is this a huge mistake/coincidence that this happened, or is someone out there pulling some sort of trickery here?

I would think there's some trickery going on.. but who knows. If it actually happened I can't imagine the headache that's going to cause.

I doubt it's a duplicate...more like his identity was stolen. My wife had this happen to her several years ago. She didn't even know until some hospital called her up asking to settle the charges related to someone else having a child under her name.

Tell him to enable a fraud alert through the big credit agencies.

A lot of mexicans do this who are illegals. There are a huge number out there. They do it to get jobs here. There was a big thing on the news last year about it. More than likely thats what is going on.

It's possible, he was born in San Diego and has a San Diego-esque SSN #..

This is what I was going to post...MOST illegal immigrants use phony social security numbers, which USUALLY belong to someone else...
This shouldn't be a huge headache to clear up, but may be time consuming as he goes through the process to prove who he is.

not possible of duplicate ss #.

there are a billion possible #'s. there's only been 700M people that were ever born since the USA was created in 1776.

and social security #'s started being issued when? 1920's after the great depression?

Identity theft, illegal immigrants, or both.

This wouldnt be such a problem if companies stopped relying and blatantly using SS numbers to open accounts and other shit. My brother had to deal with his SS number attached to 3 different mobile phone accounts.

It's possible -- SSNs aren't guaranteed to be unique, and you should never use them as a primary key.

Everyone does so anyway, though.

Think about what you said.......then ask yourself, how does the IRS keep track of you and your taxes if there was the possiblity of real duplicate SSN's. Or Social Security itself.

The answer is there is NO real, legit possibility of the Social Security Admin. ever issuing duplicate SSN's....it's not as if they don't have access to each and every number they've ever issued....hence the SSA doesn't issue dups. At all.

I once paid for a service and ran my SSN thru most of the database and it came back with 4-5 other person with other names on them. Most of them have a Hispanic name...
