Dunn Tire gouged my wheel

I was at my girlfriend's apartment Saturday and noticed a nail in my rear passenger tire. Both of the local Mazda dealer's servoce departments were closed, so I took my car to Dunn Tire.

Yesterday, I washed my car and noticed four or five gouges on the wheel when I cleaned them. The wheel is a 16" clear-coated aluminum from my 03 Miata.

The manager of Dunn was polite and said that he would reimburse for having it buffed out. I then went to my Mazda dealer who said it was to deep to be buffed, but it could be refinished. I then went to a wheel shop the dealer said to go to. They said they could refinish it, but it might not look factory.

So what should I do now? I either want a new wheel or to keep my current wheel as it is. I am not convinced that buffing or refinishing would leave me with the result I desire. Should I politely seek that Dunn shell out $225 for a new wheel?

Cliffs: Dunn Tire gouged my wheel. How do I go about replacing it?

I would go talk to the manager @ Dunn Tire; tell them about your going back and forth between mazda and the shop and tell him/her that the only viable option is to replace the wheel with a new stock one than politely ask them to pay for it. I've never worked with Dunn Tire but if they are a reputable dealership there is a good chance they will pay to replace the wheel.

Yup, I was just about the post this. Be polite. If you get nowhere after a couple weeks, make sure you take Dunn to small claims court. Take lots of pics...you'll need the evidence if you file suit.

Thanks. The manager has already admitted fault by stating that he'd pay for the cost of getting the gouges buffed out. I'm just not sure how to tell him I want the wheel replaced when it could be refinished (alhough it would be noticeably different from my other three stock wheels).

Give him the option of either replacing the one wheel or paying to have all 4 re-finished. Seems reasonable to want all the wheels to match.

It'd be cheaper to replace it. New wheel is $225. Refinishing is $100-125 per wheel.

Tell him/her that "noticably differant" is not acceptable.

the only problem is I don't have that in writing from the wheel shop or the Mazda dealer. :(

you could just ask them that they state in writing that they likely wont be able to match on repairs; make a copy and bring it with you to Dunn

Ok, I went back to Dunn's this morning and the manager asked me to go to a collision shop they do business with. He also said that refinishing them would be a last resort since they won't match the factory wheels.

The collison place said that some of the gouges could be buffed, but others were down into the aluminum.

So now it's back to Dunn's to see what the manager will do for me. He'll likely want to just repaint it, but that would look terrible in my opinion, not to mention he also said it wouldn't match. He's been very polite and willing to help so far, but I don't know what he'll say when I want $250 for a wheel.

My car is three months old. If the wheel is getting replaced it will be with a new OEM one. I don't want a used junkyard wheel. Who knows what kind of shape it's in or if it was cleaned on a weekly basis.

I went back to Dunn again and the manager said to live with the gouges or repaint it. I refuse to have one wheel not match the other three. I'll call him and ask for a new wheel or I'm going to ask for his regional manager. Then I call him or their corporate hq.

But it is used.....
(Been there done that)
Thats all they owe you.
If you don't believe me ask a lawyer

Don't go to the junkyard.
Pay the extra $50 yourself.

(03' = 3 months old?)

Technically, you're right. I simply want it in the condition it was in when it went into their shop without me having to pay for it.

And my car was a leftover 03 model that I purchased at the end of April. It had the options I wanted (only the hard suspension package) and i got over $6k off. It's new, has the full warranty, and is cheaper than any used Miatas comparable to it.

I agree
Tell that to the store manager
See what he says.
You may get lucky.....

Told the manager I would only be happy with a new wheel since buffing would still leave the deeper gougs, and refinishing isn't an option. He told me to bring the car in at 10:00 tomorrow morning for him to look at again.

Ugh, I have to go to work sometime this week.

Worst case, you could get him to pay you on an estimate to resurface the wheel and then pay the rest yourself. At least it would only cost you like $100.

That's true. However, so far he has been quite helpful and willing to do what I (the customer) desire. Although, he is trying to sway me towards a cheaper solution. We will see tomorrow.

If I had done it myself I ould just live with it since the gouges are only noticeable within 5ft. and you look for them. But since a company did it through improper use of their equipment or they didn't have the right equipment for my type of wheel they can fix it.

Update: The manager wasted my time and had me come in again today to look at the wheel. He says he only wants to repaint it. It won't match the other three that way.

I guess it's time to go above him and call corporate.

I had the exact same problem with Dunn Tire about 4 years ago. Had to have one of my tires replaced because of a blister and the scratched up the rim. Needed to be refinished but they wouldn't do that, the did get a replacement rim.

Was this the store on Jefferson and West Henrietta by the Mall? That's the one I had problems with and will never again set foot into a Dunn Tire store.
