I know we had a thread on this a couple of weeks ago

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2132267

but now we can preorder and have a solid release date! Only $40 as well

http://store.steampowered.com/app/57650

I just hope it has all the easter eggs the previous ones did, I remember playing at midnight and it would say "It's the witching hour, all curses are half price!" then next thing you know it's 3am and "A secret gaming tip, go to bed!"

searches reveal it wishes happy birthday to people if the date is correct too

While I'm extremely hopeful for a dungeon siege 3, there's no way in hell I'm going to preorder a game by a small indy developer trying to cash in on a classic franchise. It reeks of Civ5/Moo3/elemental/etc. fiascos. Crossing my fingers that I'm totally wrong though.

maybe you're confused, this is based off the Dungeon Keeper series, not Dungeon Siege

£29.99 here... once again we're getting ripped off by Steam ($40 should be closer to £25 than £30)

Civ 5 and MoO3 were not made by indy developers, they were just bad. Elemental was released long before it was ready, but it is actually a pretty good game now. It still has stability issues, but as far as gameplay goes it is a blast (although it sucked on release day, luckily they continued to work and develop the game to the point it is today, and they are continuing to develop the game. Still it would have been much better had they released the game in a more "finished" state ... )

oops, that is what I meant :)

I was also looking forward to Dungeon Siege 3 (made by Obsidian) coming out soon as well.

MoO3 was made by Quicksilver which has never made a decent product that I am aware of. The team that made Civ5 was lead by John Shafer, who had no prior developing credentials aside from beta-testing Civ4 (furthermore from what I remember, the whole team was pretty inexperienced in similar regard). My point is still valid.

So after 10 years we finally have a proper successor to Dungeon Keeper.
Shame I hate Steam.
But I will keep an eye on this.

Also, I too am waiting for Dungeon Siege 3, cuz the 2nd one wasnt much fun for me.

was anyone brave enough to pre-order? I picked up Mass Effect 2 the other day so I'm knee deep in that right now and am hoping for some AT reviews. Hopefully it is more like DK1 than DK2

I do not know what I am about to say is fact, but it seems likely. My opinion is that Steam does not control the pricing as much as you think. I am sure the developers gets to decide what they want to charge, then Steam adds $2-3 for content delivery for each sold copy. I also think that the 'Steam' sales are not Steam making the decisions complete either, I think it is decided by the developers. They probably both reduce margins in hopes that total sales will make up for it.

I think developers charge Steam an amount per license sold, and Steam sells it for whatever they want. I think Steam sets their own prices, but they are "sold" the games by the developers themselves. So, they are controlled by both parties. At least, that sounds logical. I could be way off though.

That makes much more sense and would explain why sometimes Steam, D2D and Impulse run out of "licenses" during some sales or why they raise the prices halfway during the sale.

I'm watching this, but I'm either waiting for a brave(r) soul here to either be blown away or a price drop, before I order.

It would be really nice if they offered up a demo. More and more games these days are forgoing the demo it seems and I don't want to blindly buy many games.

And the devs wonder why people pirate their games. People want to know if the game is going to be fun or if it's even going to run properly on their computer before they take the plunge.

DK2 was a pleasantly fun game, but the fun did not last long. The game became rather repetitive and boring after a while. There is not much variation in graphics or art direction. If Kalypso can address those issues and maybe bring in some varried graphics or gameplay mechanics, I'll be in love with this game.

Well in that case, a "demo" is out currently.

Maybe they have to deal with the insane VAT over there?

Aye 20% could explain the difference and the ever changing divide between the Pound and the Dollar could explain a bit of it too.

Steam is selling Retribution for $30 over there and £30 ($45) here... Thank God I managed to seal a deal on the Collectors Edition for £26 :D

The game has leaked online and the user reviews are very bad so far. I have not played it personally but I would recommend waiting for some full reviews and a price drop before committing.

I really want this to be a good game but am def not going to preorder it now. :(

That's a shame. Kalypso did a great job with Tropico 3, which was really just a modernization of the first Tropico. So if they were doing the same treatment to DK1/DK2 with Dungeons I wouldn't have had a problem since I played neither of those.

Is it a problem of bugs/glitches or is the design of the game just bad?

That's because more and more games are shorter and shorter, a demo that actually showed you a good portion of the gameplay would eat into the little time that game actually lasts....that or they know the game sucks ahead of time.

Aww... god damnit i was really hoping for something as good as DK II. Where are the user reviews? I trust them a lot more than actual review sites these days.
