Anyone remember Dungeon Keeper? Great game, and so was the sequel. But Bullfrog went under, and although it was planned it never came to fruition, Dungeon Keeper 3 died with Bullfrog.

I have read many cries for this game to be made however, simply typing Dungeon Keeper 3 in Google shows you the extent of the demand. Would you like to see this game? Just imagine it with the graphics technology of today!

Yes, Dungeon Keeper was awesome. Yes, DK3 would be awesome. But I've put it out of my mind as I don't believe it will happen.

I think EA owns the rights now. I suppose I'd rather it remains buried rather then have its corpse dug up and defiled.

DKII was good, especially the vastly improved selection of traps the workshop could make...but it was missing a little charm of the original since your creatures didn't really "grow" like the sprite based ones from DK. Still, it was a pretty good sequel.

Sadly, I dropped my DKII disk when rearranging the closet and it fell just right so that it shattered to pieces! WTF!

Yeah DKII was awesome, i only played it for the first time last year, forgot how good bulldogs games were in the past. I would rather it stayed dead too than have EA tramp all over the franchise.

I want this game so bad.
But if the first thing on your mind is "Modern Graphics" then you and I obviously dont want it for the same reason.
I want it for fun.

We havent much in the alternative RTS genre lately. We need something like this.

EDIT:
EA bought Bullfrog and stripped it.
Last official word is they have no intention of making a Dungeon Keeper game.

I really enjoyed Dungeon Keeper it was definitely one of the best games I ever played. It was so unique.. I mean.. Name one RTS since DK that allowed you to control your units from 1st person view! I dare ya!

Sadly I never played DK2 because it got sub par reviews when it came out, so I assumed it wasn't as good as the original. I was planning to check it out later, but never got around to it.

I remember playing DK1 and still fire up DK2 since I have the game and find it fun making a great death trap for invading good guys. :D

It was pretty funny as well, some of the cutscenes, the guy doing the voiceover throughout the game, like "A bile demon has become unhappy and is leaving your dungeon"! The comment about the graphics of today w/ the concept would not be the reason I'd buy the game but I was just dreaming of it, clearly the game's concept itself goes way beyond what could be potentially great eye candy.

Favourite creature? Mine was demon spawn (dk1)/salamander(dk2), put about ten of them anywhere they would own anything, especially levelled up. Those who aint seen DK2, its def still worth checking out and isn't as bad as reviews might have said all that time back. Not sure if anyone still plays it on multiplayer though so you might be hardpressed to find anyone on the server!

It wasnt as good, but still lots of fun.
The biggest problem with the move to 3D is they didnt know what kind of hardware would be available in the future. They set the max resolution to 800x600 because they never thought anywould would be able to run it higher than that.
You can go to the registry and type in any resolution you want but the game wont run higher than 800x600.

As for gameplay: They had fewer units and the units could do less. Remember in DK1 you could force your troll to research even if he wasnt very good at it?
No such luck in DK2. Creatures have only one job (if any) and thats it. You cant force them to do other work if you are desperate to get something accomplished.

Also, the portals now only allow a limited number of monsters to enter. Once they have let in so many they are dead and thats it. If you get a monster you dont like you can always dump it, but it wont be replaced.

They have a buttload more traps but it doesnt matter since you will probably prefer one or two and thats it. The only time you use the rest is during the campaign when you are required to as part of an objective.

I think you're being a bit harsh on DKII though. I actually don't remember that 800x600 thing, its of course been awhile but I was pretty sure I always ran it at 1024x768. Its possible that was addressed in the later patches? There were fewer units, but I think at least a few more were added in the later patch. I did sincerely miss some of the units from DK though. The demon spawn -> dragon was the main one. In later levels of DK I always made it a point to have a large group of dragons. They couldn't do much damage, but with their heal spell they could hold almost any super buffed heroes at bay forever while warlocks and myself pelted them with spells. DKII really does have to many human "monsters".

I don't remember that single job thing actually. It was pretty funny in DK when early on you'd need evil eye really badly (to avoid breaking accidentally into a potential heroes nest while hedgehogging) so I'd load my library up with beetles, flies or whatever other crap creature had wondered into my dungeon to get the spell.

I didn't like the casino in DKII, because I'm too cheap to pay out. The combat pit mechanic seemed to clunky and micromanagement intensive for me...one of Dungeon Keepers greatest strengths was that its AI would keep the dungeon running and do micro shit like that automatically unless told to do otherwise.

I do disagree with you on the traps though. That was deficient in DK, despite those being a big fixture of "dungeons" and I greatly appreciated the expanded workshop. I loved building elaborate trap setups. And the boulder trap? Don't tell me you didn't ever use that to beat an impossible army of heroes! (Setup a boulder trap, draw heroes into a long corridor you build, set it off...squash 'em all.

Since you brought up Bullfrog, I would prefer that they release an updated version of Syndicate. It could just be the original with updated graphics as far as I am concerned.

Dungeon Keeper was awesome too though. I wouldn't mind playing a new version of that.

I still have it.
I play it at least once a year (up to the last level or 2nd to last).

It runs at max 800x600.
Unless there is a "Special" patch I dont know about. But I always dig around for stuff like that every time I install it.
Like I said, I did find the registry entry for the game. It will let you enable other resolutions like 1024x768, 1280 and 1600 but they get all messed up when you try to run the game.

Let me reinstall it and maybe I can do some screenshots with FRAPS or something.

EDIT:
Its nice to play a game without a fuckin security code.

Anyway, without patches the thing only runs a 400x300, 512x384, 640x480 and 800x600.
This is the first time I played it on my Radeon 4870 and I cant see the 3D backround on the menu screen. CANT SEE ANYTHING IN GAME!
Crap.

Will install patches and let you know what happens.

EDIT 2:
Ok with patch 1.7 I can see 3D stuff in game. Home menu is still black. I had to guess where stuff was on the map, which means I probably wont be able to access the secret levels when I unlock them.

Enabled all the custom resolutions in the registry.
1024x768 is working OK, but there are buttloads of artifacts & stuff all over the place.
Will try higher resolutions as I feel safe.

Game crashed when I tried to open the Objectives window. Will try again at lower res.

EDIT again:
When it crashed it left the process running in the backround. Could not kill it.
Had to restart.

FINAL EDIT:
It wont run at all now. Every time I start it I get the standard crash dialog and request to send info to Microsoft about it.
Tried registry settings to get it back to 800x600 and disabled all the higher resolutions again.
Just does not want to run now. Something bad happened when it crashed the first time and now its screwed.
Did try using the Compatibility Mode but that didnt help (which wasnt a suprise).

Bummer. Fun game dead.
Nothing better to look forward to.
Guess I'll go back to Deus Ex.

Yeah, I think that game had some issues with video cards that were current when it came out. Both ATI and Nvidia have broken older game support a lot, particularly since the DX10 cards were released-16-bit color looks like crap and has no fix for either card in my experience. I remember having to do a fair amount of tweaking to get it running on my old x850xt and stop it from crashing so its no surprise it's ugly with modern cards.

Unless it's something with the newness of the card, turn AA and AF off and give it another try.

They're making an Asian Dungeon Keeper MMO. I don't have high hopes for the future of the franchise.
