Taking the lesser amount probably had more of an impact on his agent than it did on him. When you start getting into that kind of money is 11 million going to make that much of a difference in your llife? On the other hand by not taking that extra money he is allowing his team to compete at a high level which will probably have more of an impact on his life than that money. Smart move by Tim IMO. Koby Bryant should take note as should that self centered asshole ARod.

andruw jones gave the braves a similar type discount to the braves the last time they signed him, and that's with boris as his agent. he and his dad negotiated the contract with the braves without boris.

i don't think he'll do the same this time. i think andruw is going for the money, but i doubt he'll get anywhere close to ARod money.

too bad, he was a fixture with the braves for so long.

good move by duncan tho, class act all the way.

I think the whole spurs team was willing to take less money so that they could stay together.

Ducan also did the same thing years ago.

Its probably true that Kobe would be willing to take less money to get more talent around him, problem is that he can't redo his contract midway through it.

I'm glad we got Duncan signed to an extension - that will put him through to 2013 I believe. The great thing is we have some good prospects, along with an incredibly talented PF sitting in Europe right now (Tiago Splitter.) It sucks that Oden is out for the season, because tonight's season opener was going to be a show down of old school vs. new school.

i think shaq did the same thing when he was traded to miami a few years ago. both of them probably know they're in the twilight of their careers...

Shaq did - yes ... but don't compare Duncan to Shaq - they are not the same type of player. Duncan hasn't even approached the twilight of his career.

Please the whole reason Shaq left LA was because of money. His fatass wanted 30 mil per yr over 6 years. The reason he "settled" for less was because nobody was going to pay him that much money

Popovich and Holt sat down with Duncan to discuss extension.
They offered maximum, but then also told him their long term plan for him to decide if he wants to take less money.
Duncan took $40mil extension instead of $51mil during those two extended years.
Duncan is now under contract until the summer of 2012. (I know I said 2013 earlier, I was a year off.)

That's a good move if playing on a better team is worth that sort of dough to him. Seriously, if being competitive for a couple more years is worth $11mm (whatever it is), then great. Apparently it is but does that somehow make him "classy"? No, it makes him someone who knows what he wants. Lots of other things make TD classy, like his demeanor and bearing.

Now SA will have a lot easier time keeping Ginobli, Parker, etc. or maybe bringing in someone else.

That sucks.

And his rugged good looks?

The spurs are a class act for offering the max salary for 4 and 5 years down the line, and duncan is a class act for accepting less in order to benefit the potential success of the team.

Among other things, that's why the spurs are one of the most respected organizations in the business, and why duncan is one of the most coveted players in the league.

Duncan needs to get hurt for a year, let the Spurs get the #1 pick so they can draft Tim Duncan II and have them start a new dynasty.

As for the actual situation here, I admire Duncan a lot, but I don't consider this to be that big of a deal. It's kind of sad when it's considered all that admirable when someone doesn't pull an alex rodriguez / chris webber.

TD II and TD III are already in the league - read, Greg Oden and Dwight Howard.

And to the Mavs fan above, my fiancee is one too ... talk about a divided household, me being a Spurs fan and her a Mavs fan.

If Duncan didn't cry like a girl every time a foul is called on him, I might agree. Until then, I'll just laugh as he almost gets away with murder and still has that stupid look on his face.
