I need a load of dirt to fill in my backyard. It has a lot of dips that fill up when it rains. Does anyone know about how much they charge for a load of dirt to be dumped in your driveway that I can then wheelbarrow into the back yard?

thanks!

Contact your local landscape center. Around here I would expect somewhere in the range of $25 per yard of dirt delivered, with a 5 yard minimum.

Know what kind of dirt you want and how much you want before hand. Normally they will charge you a delivery fee or a truck rental fee. Good luck.

We just poured 4 yards of cement for a patio and sidewalk over the weekend, 4 yards of sand/gravel mix delivered came to $140 including taxes. I'm not sure how fill dirt compares to sand/gravel mix, call around.

Edit: Whoops, the total came to $180, not $140.

Realize that you probably want topsoil, not just 'dirt'. Ask for cheap 'dirt' and you may get 'fill'. 'Fill' is comprised of broken concrete, clay, gravel, tree stumps, and anyting else people can find that takes up room, like their mother-in-laws.

Topsoil itself comes in many flavours, and yes, people who know may test the soil by tasting it. Bad topsoil will have a large amount of inorganics (sand and clay) that do not promote plant growth, and may contain a lot of weeds.

'Triple-mix' is a common phrase used, albeit incorrectly by some. It should be your best bet.

Ask at local nuseries, who provides the best topsoil in the area.
