That's nothing. I got dumped via email after a 3 year where we lived together for one of them. It was long distance at the time, but we were planning on moving back in once she graduated.

Would you have preferred that she dumped you via powerpoint presentation?

I think I would, now that I think about it.

Whoa, come on man. You can't beat yourself down from the start. Women don't like that... it gives them less beat down themselves.

boogiman- i'm on the same wavelength with you on this. OP - just reply back to her email with something like "Oh yikes, i guess you beat me to it. thanks for making it easy on me to start seeing other girls 'cause that's really been on my mind for the past couple of weeks now." she probably won't admit it, but reading something along those lines would sting.

No, that just makes you sound childish. Boogiman's second suggestion is good (nay, great :) ) though. The whole: "You can't dump me cause I was gonna dump you first" thing is dumb and doesn't work because the OP was setting up another date with her anyways.

you're right--they were supposed to go out again, but hypothetically he could have broken up with her in person during THAT date (which is the appropriate thing to do rather than email, text msg, myspace, or what not) IF he truly had other girls in mind. the OP can chose whichever one Boogiman suggested, but the only drawback i see with him choosing #2 is that the ex-GF can say something to her friends & quite possibly the OP's potential future GFs that he had gone out with somebody behind her back and she has something in writing to prove it. girls usually don't care how badly the relationship ended between a guy & a girl (including their best girlfriends) because they expect break-ups to be nasty...but what raises red flags is if the guy has a history of dating someone else on the side.
the other option for the OP is to tell his ex straight-up that what she did was BS and that break-up via email is soooooo uncool. (she's likely a future "runaway bride" anyway)

Was it one of these emails?

Dear <%Name%>,
I am sorry. It isn't about you, <%Name%>, it's about me. You see, I've <%lame_reason01%> and I don't want to hurt you any more.

You are a wonderful person and I'll know you'll find that special girl, the one who'll enjoy <%Name_hobby01%> just as much as you do. I just know that when I <%lame_reason02%>, I feel quilty. So it is best that I end it. I am so sorry for ending it this way, it is not the best way but it is the best that I can do. I know, lame.

I know you'll probably hate me and I deserve it. But I feel <%muted_joy_expression01%> now that it is over. Please try to understand that I <%lame_reason03%> and <%lame_excuse01%> to go my own way.

Please do not call, write, visit, IM, ping, IRC, DoS, stalk, or blog me. I feel it is best for both of us if we just end it here.

Goodbye,
<%cutesy_affectation_you_used_to_call_me%>

P.S. What is your <%best_friend_male%>'s IM again?

:D

Just got dumped via email - we were supposed to go out tonight - confirmed that yesterday afternoon. She not only canceled that, but dumped me altogether. Now, the relationship wasn't particularly long or serious - but I still thought that was pretty tacky.

sigh ... or maybe I'm just showing my age. All 37 years of it.
email, PMs, Instant Messaging, etc. has created a whole new generation of cowards who hid behind monitors and the typed word to do things that they can't pony up and do face to face to someone.
