Is it possible to create a index array from a line in a textfile?

In what language? In ruby you would use the "readline" command, IIRC.

Oh yeah, sorry, I always think of awk as just a program, not a language.

edit: it looks like the "split" command should do that. Just use a space as the FS, if you want the array to be per word. Or apparently you can leave the FS blank to index per character.
