Dumbing down...

Techchick said something in my thread about CASH that made me remember something that occurred when I was in the Marines back in the early 70's.

Though I joined at the ripe old age of 17 and hadn't even finished High School when I signed up, I did have a high IQ, and due to the fact that I grew up in a well educated family I had a firm grasp on the English language. (this was all of course, before I discovered the wonders of DRUGS...)

Anyway, I soon discovered that not ALL people were as well spoken as I was, and that a lot of those that weren't assumed I was putting on airs by speaking properly.

After a time, I learned to dumb down to their level in order to be accepted.

Have others ever experienced this?

Would you "dumb down" in order to fit it?

So they're racist then.

I don't know what you call it... they had friends that were white and the white guys beat on the proper talking people too..

No I don't dumb down. I know a girl who gets surprised at how I speak and the words I use, simply because I can say more than ya'll and ain't instead of isn't. It's rather sad.

That's just pathetic, beating somebody up because their smarter and/or more intelligent/educated than the beater. I guess they'll make up for it later when they boss the beater around during whatever job then end up with in life.

No way! In fact I drop references to 19th century Russian playwrights into almost all conversations! Dumbing it down? Now that reminds me of ol' Alexandr Ostrovsky!

To me it hints of works I've read by Romerstadt.

I didn't dumb down my resume and qualifications when seeking a part-time job...

Result:
Best Buy interview with a manager that I could train because they were intellectually challenged
Dick's Sporting Goods interview with a manager who had less qualifications to do their jobs than I did - never heard back
Compusa - was hiring - No interview
4 grocery stores(Relative worked at one) - all hiring - no interview
Wal Mart, Target(Relative worked there), Big Lots - all hiring - no interview
probably 7-10 other places(Circuit City, Staples, Office Depot..etc - no interviews

Yet some of these places employ people that cannot even speak English or it is their first job

Sometimes it's necessary to dumb yourself down to fit in with mental midgets

Of course... its called adapting to a situation.
Its the same reason I takl like a retard to my dog.

Does he understand you?
Yup... she understands simple commands and the tone of my voice.
She acts like she appreciates Sartre, but I think she's just faking the funk to make me happy.

Yeah I agree. When I go places I don't really mind what people will say because I believe in myself and I don't really care about what they think especially when I know what I believe in is right. It makes sense right? WHen you think of what other people will say, nothing will happen to you.

I always laugh at people who try to sound smart by using big words that they think no one understands. You can sound smart without having to use long unnecessary words when there are shorter/faster ways to say it.

I don't think I'd call it dumbing down, but yeah I do change when talking to some people so I don't stick out like a sore thumb

holy thread necro. I was super confused because I haven't seen brutuskend around for a long time, and then I looked at the date.

CHRIST.
