Besides, not knowing how to use a computer for basic communications-type purposes is pretty much like being illiterate. And I don't have a problem making fun of grown people who can't read...

Cheers!

Tech Guy: We will be sending you the qoute for your 512MB Ram
Me: What's it looking like?
Tech Guy: About $86
Me: OK. <Hangs up, then searches Crucial.com for memory to find it's $76 shipped. Calls back Tech Guy>

Me: Hey Tech Guy, are we obligated to use Dell for memory purchases?
Tech Guy: No.
Me: Good, because I found the same spec'd Ram at Crucial.com for $10 cheaper.
Tech Guy: hmmmm, well I need to talk to my manager to see if it's ok to buy from an off-brand dealer.
Me:

It's not so much that they're dumb, but when they get nasty and blame tech support for their ignorant mistakes it's hard not to be a little miffed.

And hi Irma :p

I agree. I'm getting sick of Tech Support people bashing the users and treating them like idiots. We're here to make their jobs easier, not vice versa.

You want some cheese with that wine?

pot, kettle, black?

There you go again with your raciest comments! :p

I have this problem at work too. Whenever I want to purchase something, I like to make it easy on the purchasing dept. and buy from places that have established accounts. I know it's cheaper elsewhere. So I overpay and use techdepot and cdwg like mad since they are easy and usually get my product I order overnight.

As it is though, the only people who ask me to fix them are my friends and all I usually get out of my 3-4 hours of work is mcdonalds

That makes me feel better. I got chicken and noodles after cleaning out 953 viruses, and several hundred more spyware/adware files. Then, I had to train the person how to use a computer, what files to open in email, which to ignore... And, I correctly installed an antivirus program that self-updates, and replaced her cd-rom with a 52x burner I had just purchased for my next computer.

OMG! Like, totally, this patient came in complaining of difficulty swallowing, pain in his throat, a chronic cough, vomitting, and coughing up blood. He said that he thought he had bronchitis! I mean, WTF?! When the doctor told him that he had Esophageal Cancer he almost fell to the floor laughing!!! LMAO!! What a frickin dumbass that patient was!

Seriously, it's your job to help people, not to make fun of them because they lack knowledge pertaining to what you do for a living. I don't know of a single doctor who makes fun of a patient who doesn't know what's wrong with their body, or thinks he/she has something that they don't. The worst I've seen is irritation because the patient won't believe a diagnosis, but we don't laugh about it. Get rid of your God complex and realize that some people have more important things to do than learn about and understand computers past the point of word processing and email. If we all knew what you did, you wouldn't have a job.

Yes, but some of these are more like someone going into the Doc and saying it hurts when I hit myself in the face. Or someone saying they are blind, when all they need to do is brush the hair out of their eyes.

Oh puuuleeeze to all you who have this "don't bash the poor user" mentality! I've done tech support myself and sometimes you just need to blow off a little steam and rant to someone about some friggin moron of a user who is a danger to the human race by his or her mere existance on this planet! Get off you high horses and just chill! I see more bashing of n00bs here when someone does a REPOST of somthing. Most of us are quick to get in line and be the "repost nazis" when this happens and thus bash the "poor poster" telling him or her what a putz for not using the serch function, or "welcome to today, n00b", blah, blah, blah... And yes, I've been on both sides of this. It's part of the game and part of living on ATOT! Right! ;)

So, yes, we know that with out moron users some of us would not have jobs. BFD! You still need to vent sometimes and we've all been there. Anyone who says otherwise is a friggin liar.

Thank you. That is all.

They're usually yelling at you while you "fix" their problem. That normally keeps me from laughing.

cockpit error....

I get calls all the time that users have power cycled their computer.

I go to their desk and they are just turning on and off the monitor

very very common, just as your trouble is

I also love when people come in 5 minutes before class and print out a report. This is especially fun on busy days when the printers have a 30-45 minute backlog.

User: Can you get my printout, I have class in 5 minutes.
Me: Did you just print it?
User: Yes.
Me: The printers are backed up because everyone's printing. It'll be at least a half-hour before it comes out.
User: But I need it for class in 5 minutes.
Me: I can't make the printers go any faster.
User: But I need it.
Me: There's nothing I can do.
User: But the professor will count it as late and I'll lose a whole letter grade!
Me: Next time, don't wait until the last minute.

i never understood people who do that. it's like, you finished the paper, so why didn't you print it out right then? why wait until just before class to print it out on someone else's machine that might or might not work?

This is the most astute response here. Practically everything else stinks of arrogance and intolerance. It is impossible / impractical to know everything about all things. As you age and gain life experience, you will realize there are more things you DON't know about, than those you do. Treating people who are frustrated with a box with wires that won't do what they want it to with patience and a measure of kindness will reap more rewards than stifiling a rude response.
Some of you are just plain jerks.< had a different adjective in mind.......

Not everyone knows how to use computers properly. I don't know jack schitt about cars but I like to think mechanics don't mock me on public internet forums (although it wouldn't surprise me if they did).

Some people just don't want to learn how to use a pc beyond email/word. What's wrong with that? I don't want to learn anything about a car beyond driving it. I have no interest in them.

My father is a retired civil engineer who is responsible for some amazing stuff that I couldn't dream of doing. Not to mention he built his house by himself. But he can't even open Internet Explorer without my help.
