This lady here at work isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer but she just took the cake this time.

This is copied directly from our ticketing program here at my work.

Irma said that her PC was not powering on. When I got there i noticed the monitor was on but the PC wasn't. I turned the PC on and everything worked. Irma is used to it being in "sleep" mode and was trying to turn it on from the mouse.

I just saw this and laughed my ass off.

Still doesn't beat the guy in my lab who tried to put a floppy diskette into the tray-loading CD-ROM drive. It's a small miracle I was passing by when he tried it or we'd have had one dead CD-ROM drive.

I'm also fond of the guy who blamed me for installing the building's HVAC blower so close to the lab because he was bothered by the hum. (Riiiight, like the lab techs have control over architecture...)

we had one lady here at work who complained that she couldn't play music cds, and blamed it on us upgrading her computer from ME to XP.

Turns out she didn't have any speakers...

True story - I got a trouble ticket that a user was having problems with Windows. So I get to the lady's desk and she demonstrates that none of her apps are working. Long story short, I eventually open up Explorer and I realize that this user has deleted about 90% of the directory. Practically the only thing left was the system files that were in use. Easily the wierdest user I ever encountered

Back when I did tech support for a living (I'm a few rungs up the ladder now, fortunately) we had a grad student stick a floppy into a slot-load CD drive... that sucker was a pain to remove! :disgust:

One of the best calls I've ever gotten was from a user who had a Mac KB with an integrated keypad (some of the older ones were separate). She insisted that someone come by to remove her keypad because it was too confusing to be able to type numbers in two different places on the KB. One of our techs offered to go over with a hacksaw and take care of the problem... :D

I was in the computer lab and we were working on our programs. The workstation next to me is empty, and a few guys come in to use it. They move the mouse around a bit, it doesn't turn on. They check to see if it's plugged in, and it is. They move the mouse again and it doesn't turned on. Eventually I just pressed the power button and it powered up.

Still one of the best in my days was when I was doing tech support for a large call center and after a user told me his issue, I started walking him through how to get to the control panel, but saying "Click on start, then settings, then control panel", well he was an older man and I guess this was a bit much for him to take in at one time and he yelled at me "stop treating me like a god damn idiot!" to which I replied "I'm sorry sir if you feel like and idiot, I am just going the same pace I do with everyone else" at which point he hung up the phone in anger.

Man I lauged my ass off for a good 10 mins straight after that one.

A slot-load I can almost understand (we get people putting floppies into ZIP drives all the time) but putting a floppy into a tray-loading drive? I still can't get over that guy. I also love when people come in 5 minutes before class and print out a report. This is especially fun on busy days when the printers have a 30-45 minute backlog.

User: Can you get my printout, I have class in 5 minutes.
Me: Did you just print it?
User: Yes.
Me: The printers are backed up because everyone's printing. It'll be at least a half-hour before it comes out.
User: But I need it for class in 5 minutes.
Me: I can't make the printers go any faster.
User: But I need it.
Me: There's nothing I can do.
User: But the professor will count it as late and I'll lose a whole letter grade!
Me: Next time, don't wait until the last minute.

Not everyone knows how to use computers, that's why you have a job. She's not 'dumb,' she's ignorant and there is quite a difference. If you can't see that perhaps you're in the wrong field.

I have to agree. My father has a PhD and the whole "Start, Control Panel" etc thing is almost too complicated for him.

If you wanted to... is there really no queue for you to toy with ?

And yes... this is why most of you have jobs... so don't knock the slow people. ;)

I agree. I'm getting sick of Tech Support people bashing the users and treating them like idiots. We're here to make their jobs easier, not vice versa.

If I worked in the computer field I'd be happy that there are people out there who don't know anything about computers and are willing to pay good money for me to fix them.

As it is though, the only people who ask me to fix them are my friends and all I usually get out of my 3-4 hours of work is mcdonalds

I'm sure there are car mechanics who have car owners also... or doctors who laugh at silly self-diagnosis attempts.

Man you guys are to serious here, I was just sharing with a bunch of tech savvy people the experience I had and found funny, I'm not saying she is truly a dumb person just saying that the problem she had was dumb, everyone needs to take a chill pill and lighten up a bit.

nothing beats the clients who shut down their dedicated servers by accident when they're trying to reboot them.

it's easy enough to fix (find the server, turn it back on), but we get 4-5 of them every night. how do you fvck something like that up? you just hit restart instead of shutdown.

most of these people host commercial websites on their servers; you'd think they'd take the extra second to see which button they're hitting, especially when it means up to half an hour of downtime if they don't call in and we're *really* backed up and don't have time to check the in-coming tickets.

Oh, come on. Who does it hurt if someone mocks a dumb user on ATOT? It's not like he's doing it to their face, or even telling anyone they know.

Besides, not knowing how to use a computer for basic communications-type purposes is pretty much like being illiterate. And I don't have a problem making fun of grown people who can't read...
