Dumb Woman Pushes Fire Button

Ever wonder what happens when you press that red emergency fire button at a gas station? This dumb woman pushes it accidentally and reveals the mystery.

The only button I've ever noticed are the ones at the intercom things, "Press for Service." Maybe that's what she thought it was?


But is that really all it takes to activate that fire suppression system? Just a simple press of one easily-accessible button? And that looks like some kind of dry chemical extinguishing agent - probably not cheap for the gas station.

I was on a remote mountain jobsite, operating a loader similar to this one.
Cat 966
It had all the bells and whistles, including a dry chemical fire suppression system. It was right next to the ladder, so you coud trigger it as you bailed off the burning machine
I was using the forks and working with some carpenters. One of the guys was Jim, one of the resident paramedics. he comes up and says "what's that for?",
and triggers the system as I sit there idling. All hell breaks loose.
I shut off the engine quickly, and wait for all the crap to clear out.
He was forever known on that job as "fireman Jim".

I remember about 30 years ago when Cat first came out with the D-10 (now called the D-11) and it had a Halon fire suppression system. There were stories/rumors about mechanics working in the engine compartment when the halon system went off...rumors said a few died because they couldn't get out and were asphyxiated. I do NOT know that to be truth, just jobsite rumors at the time. I do remember Cat doing a MAJOR revamping of the fire suppression systems shortly thereafter.

If not for a fire and as a prank/stupidity, yes they'd be responsible. Otherwise it's part of the insurance settlement.
