Dumb UPS question

I want to keep my Back-UPS Pro 1400I as cool as possible to lengthen the battery life. I have currently got my computer right beside the UPS. My query then is, would I be better off (cooling-wise) to actually have the computer ON the UPS itself, seeing as the UPS has grills on both sides to let hot air out?

Also can I use a standard null-modem cable to communicate with it if I got Win2K?
