So I dug up an old compute for my son, a dell 2.8ghz with 512m/b of ram and 20 gig hard drive. I cannot get ubuntu to install on it. Windows xp installed fine. What can I do to make this install, tried ubuntu and the alternate install disk. It either freezes or throws up a bunch of various errors.

Any thoughts or suggestions, Thanks Todd

what error messages or symptoms do you have? did you try a safe graphics mode install? Did you go into the help from the boot menu on the live cd? there are several things listed there to try and one of them refers to dell. You are probably going to have to use the safe graphics install or read the help and see if anything there matches what is happening.

If you give more info after trying the above we can help you further

When I use the alt cd and it is displaying the lines of text, it talks about the network connection failed, its not hook to the network yet, but also gave a soft cpu error, doesn't seem to be video related. does't seem to get to x.

Whats the odds of it being a bad disk, been using cd-rws that have been reused, or the dell bios has an os install option?

try the normal live cd again. there is a check cd option if you are concerned about that. when you get the initial boot screen hit f1 (at work, so could be another f key) for help - that will call up another menu and check through all the options there. One concerns some dell computers

also try this just for fun. when you get the boot screen highlight the safe graphics option (use the down arrow) then hit f6 and add this to that line then hit enter

noapic nolapic

I am doing this all from memory at work but so I could be off a little but dont think I am.

The network connection errors shouldnt cause it to not install but please check out what the live cd has for help from the boot screen and try what it says for dells
