dumb question

Maybe someone can tell me if you can mix both DDR and SDRAM on a motherboard that supports both. I was thinking about getting this mobo ASUS A7A266 266FSB 5-PCI 1-AGP DDR/SDRAM. I have a bunch of sdram and didnt want to just throw it away. Even if I could use both (DDR/SDRAM) on the same mobo wouldnt it slow everything down to the point where there is really no reason I should get the DDR mobo? Thanks.

Only one or the other can be installed in the system at the same time.

No, the manual says on page 8, "Caution: Do not use DDR & SDRAM modules simultaneously."
