Dumb question

Sorry guys, have a noob question, been out of this RAM speed/FSB game for too long (had PC3200 like since the day Northwood came out).

Considering a Conroe or AM2 setup. Assuming I get the E6600 (which says 106x mhz on some sites), do I need DDR2 that runs at 1066? or would PC2-800 suffice? Not going to overclock or anything but wouldn't mind the extra performance if it woudl help.

Thanks in advance.

If you go with Conroe you really would do best to spring for 1066mhz, but as has been mentioned, its far from cheap. ($425-$500 for a 2gb kit)

With AM2 its much less important to get the fastest DDR2 possible, tight timings are more important with A64's so, I'd suggest 800mhz with 4-4-4-12 timing as a good target, just be sure to check your motherboards compatability-list before buying, because many of the new AM2 boards are very picky about RAM.

1066: if supported and if you can afford it

extra performance in what?

Basically running few virtual machines. And the occasional game of CS 🙂
