The "G-string" was a term invented by Herodotus, in his famous work The Histories. Greek soldiers were known to fight naked except for their shields and armour. However, the G-string, or "Greek String", was worn in particularly cold weather to save embarrassment. Strangely, there is no "G" in the Greek alphabet.

why are g-strings called g-strings?

When one plucks or draws a bow over the string, the sound made is of the note "G", thus the name is a G- string.

Cheers ! :)

Did Linuxboy just make a joke? And there are no words in his post that I have to use a dictionary on. Wow!

<< why is homosexual and happy the same word? >>

They don't mean the same thing.

Gay = Happy or Homosexual.

Gay does not automatically mean homosexual.

And here I always thought it was because when you saw a hottie in one you would go
"Gee, LOOK AT THAT!!"

From the The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language: Fourth Edition. 2000:

ETYMOLOGY: Origin unknown.

I guess Strings A through F just didn't cut it, but they got something right when they hit String-G. :D
