I have a feeling that you suck at clipping the fan on just as much as you suck at English. That's the first I've heard that the clips are that flimsy.

The clips work FINE... my XP-120 has a panaflo on it using the clips, I don't know what you're talking about... 😕

I can sort of see how it mounts on top, but where are the holes for screws? Do you have to buy a special fan? Which fans are recommended?

THERMALRIGHT XP-120

No special fans are required.... any 120mm fan, I recommned a Panaflo. All you do is put the clips through the screw holes on the fan and then it shows you where to clip them in on the HS.

yes the XP 120 comes with a book that has explicit directions...including clipping on the fan!

You can also go to the thermalright website and get instructions!!

But the clip only works on fans with open ears. If the mounting ears on your fan are bridged (like on the Nexus or Sanyo-Denki), you will have to get an optional clip that clips to the top of the fan rather than the bottom ear. I guess there are several clips available depending on the thickness of the fan you want to use. Contact John at jab-tech.com if you need one of the optional clips and can't find one where you normally shop.
. I think several clips came with the earlier models, but they only put one in with the 120.

True true. I remember reading a review of the XP-90 once, and the reviewer purposely used one of those Evercool aluminum fans that are closed all the way through...they ended up bending the clips beyond belief to hold the fan in place. It wasn't a pretty sight.

Just something to keep in mind.

They (TR) rec a Panaflo M1A I think. I use a Nexus (which can be easily modified w/in 10 minutes with a hack/handsaw since it is a closed chassis fan) to fit atop the XP120. If you want a quiet, inexpensive, open chassis fan then check out the CoolerMaster 42cfm'rs over at JabTech. See the 3rd pic on the link you posted? Those are da clips 🙂

Good pix, JBDan. Yes, some companies bridge the ears to add stiffness to the frame as well as to reduce a potential noise source - those mounting ears hanging out there in the breeze...

They could get nearly as much benefit from an arched bridge rather than a straight span and then those XP/SI-120 standard clips would probably work w/o any modding. Not to mention that those closed mounting holes really limit your choices of mounting methods.
