Dumb question: DVD-ROM and CD-RW on same channel?

I have a DVD-ROM as the master on the secondary IDE channel. I want to add a CD-RW as the slave on the same channel. Are there compatibility issues here? Will I be able to copy CD's from the DVD-ROM to the CD-RW? (I am not hoping to be able to copy DVD's, only CD's.)

Thanks in advance.

There are some incompatibilities with Nero, which recommends they be on different channels. (I think for direct CD-CD copying if I'm not wrong)

I had my CDRW as master and the DVDROM as slave for about 1year.

No problem. :)

It can be a problem when trying to directly copy from the DVD-ROM to the CD-RW. With my system I can only burn at 2x with both drives on the same channel, if I try to burn any faster I will make a coaster. However this isn't a problem if you make a hardrive image of the disk your are copying first, then burn it from there.

Maybe he wants to copy from CD to CD?

It worked for me a while back, I had a Hitachi GD-2500 (great DAE) + Ricoh 6070A

I had my DVDRom (Pioneer 10x) as Slave in UDMA mode and CDRW (Yamaha 8x8) as master for quite a while and it worked fine.

I always did create image on hard drive, then burn image to CDRW at 8x.
Works fine, takes less than 15minutes.

Going DVD to CDRW direct might cause some troubles though. Not incompatibilties, but just bus contention. IDE isn't very effecient with multitasking, and esepcially with the DVD Rom being in UDMA mode 2 and the CDRW in PIO mode 4 it's extremely difficult for IDE to keep up a decent transfer rate between the two...(And if you put your DVD in PIOmode4 DVD playback takes a nosedive) you might get buffer underruns.
Of course if you have a plextor burnproof this isn't an issue ;)

On my old Abit BH6 it worked fine with my Toshiba DVD-ROM as secondary master and my Memorex CRW-1622 as secondary slave. However on my Abit KT-7 DVD movies skip/pause with the same setup so I had to take my burner out and stick it in another computer, go figure??? It sounds like it's just something you need to try, it might work, it might not....
