What do you expect? It's a geek forum.

I'm going to stand pat about NOT doing back/bi the day after chest/tri....shoulders are getting killed.

1. do your option 2 (biceps/back)
2. LEG day instead (do them squats!!)
3. rest and work out tomorrow

i would only pick option 3 above IF i feel tired and exhausted from yesterday's workout.

Is there any point in working out quads and calves if you're running for your cardio?

What are your goals?

Short answer is YES... as squats are probably the most important exercise one can do...and those who don't are bitches...(unless they have a valid reason).

Time to get a weight bar and some free weights then. I do most of my stuff on a weight machine I bought a few years ago. The quad and calf lifts I did on it never felt like they were doing anything.

You'd be wrong.

My back day has always been the day after chest. My shoulders are fine.

Shoulder health has more to do with muscle symmetry than anything else. If you're pulling as much as you're pushing, most shoulder pain will clear itself.

Also, I directly work shoulders on a separate day.

Mon: Chest and tris
Tue: Back
Wed: Off
Thur: Legs
Fri: Shoulders and bis

Who here was talking about pain? Overworking a muscle group != pain.

Ah. When most people make shoulder comments they are usually talking about pain. Sorry for assuming.

At any rate, I doubt it over works your shoulders. My shoulders are doing just fine, as is my back and chest. I've always done chest and back on back to back days and never suffered from overtraining in my shoulders.

I would say my progress rules out any suggestion of shoulder over training.

It depends on your goals. Working out legs takes forever for me, as I have naturally strong legs and it takes forever for me to left to failure. There are machines the gym that I can't use because my legs are stronger than the weight that is available on them. I wish I could transfer some of it to my upper body :D.

So, long story short, I do squats because I like them, occasionally I load up the sled for leg press just for fun, and that's about it. I don't want gigantic bulky legs, I already have leg strength and stamina, and I'm not a body builder, so I don't have a focused "leg day".

There are only two reasons to lift: get big and get strong. If you're satisfied with your strength and/or your bigness, then no, no need to qork (or work, even) quads and calves. It's a preference thing.

Your not squating enough if you can't get to failure...

Video yourself doing 100Kg backsquat for 20reps all past parallel and I gurantee your legs will be fried by 12-14reps; then you have 8-6more to do :)

You should ALWAYS work your legs. Your legs can never be strong enough. If you want to build a body = do legs. Running alone is not enough unless your a genetic freak, even then you'll get better development if you direct leg work. Running uses a very limited range of movement. This is why runner who don't stretch can't squat properly worth sh!t. Their hamstrings are FAR TOO TIGHT!

Koing

I'll echo everyone else who is saying that leg work, and squats in particular, are very important to overall development. Free weight squats work your whole body when done correctly.

Also LOL at people saying they don't want their legs to be "too bulky". Do you think they grow by accident? Do you think you will just suddenly wake up one morning and your legs will be 3" bigger around? There are people who WANT their legs to be big and have to bust their ass and eat like a horse to see any growth at all.
