How come when they are being attacked/boarded/etc, they don't just beam the attackers from the ship/other damaged ship into outerspace?

Teleportation war (evil laugh)

well.....ummmm.......if they were being attacked and they had their shields up they'd have to drop them and they'd be damaged.....yeah i really have no idea :D

along similar lines, why can't star wars be any good? (man i'm gonna get flamed....)

Well, Star Trek Rules state you can't transport or shoot through shields. If the baddies are shooting at you, chances are you have your shields up, so you can't transport.
If you're shooting at them, chances are they've got their shields up, so you're still screwed.
If the other ship is disabled to the point that their shields don't work, then you don't really need to worry about it anyway.

Besides....transporting creates tachyon fields, which are the root of all evil in the ST universe.
No joke, I was watching an episode of TNG 2 weeks ago, one that I had never seen and all this weird crap was going down and they couldn't figure out what it was.
I turned to my gf and was like "$10 says the problem is related to tachyons."
Sure enough near the end of the episode, Data's like "I got it! There's a tachyon field fuxing our crap up!"

ROFL.
When in doubt....tachyons.

Excellently technical response, Jzero.

However, they don't do it for a much more fundamental reason.

STAR TREK IS A TV SHOW!!!

That would not make for a good plot, so they don't do it. And then they invent "rules" why thay "can't"

Well, yeah...that too. :)
As Arthur C. Clarke once wrote:
"No Warp 6 will ever get you from one episode to another in time for next week's installment. The Great Producer in the sky has not arranged his programme planning that way."

Yeh it's whack. She watches Star Trek, plays video games/board games/RPGs, paintball, watches anime...
she's pretty rare find for a geek.

Then you need to get in gear boy! As for the entire teleporting thing, why? The onyl way they could do that is if the other ship's shields were down. If the other guys shields were down, you can just blow the crap out of their ship. I'm sure wasting energy isn't the wisest thing to do...

My favorite one is "why is Picard bald?"

This is a few hundred years in the FUTURE you know. We have seen him in episodes where is is trapped away from the ship and his fringe of hair is growing out (except on top). You'd think they'd have solved male pattern baldness by then. :D

EDIT: Thay HAVE beamed bad guys into space . . . remember Nomad? (where they confused it and got it to self destruct)

P.S.'s reply on Leno/Letterman (?) was that in the future no one really should care if you were bald or not. A fair statement, I guess. His comment got little response from the audience.

A queer question from Spooner, one who apparently finds little entertainment with Star Trek, but who still bothers to read and post in a Star Trek thread. The mere existence of said thread answers the question Spooner asked; guess this is too cerebral for him.

Can you use a teleporter when you're cloaked?

If so, I would say the Romulans and Klingons have a slight upper hand...

In the current Enterprise show, with Captain Archer, the transporters haven't yet been "approved" for use on humans, though they have used it to beam the captain off of a disintegrating space station. Regular use isn't recommended yet.

Otherwise, you can't transport through shields.

"You'd think they'd have solved male pattern baldness by then"
They don't seem to be centered on vanity as much in the future. They are of course trying to show progress.;)

"Can you use a teleporter when you're cloaked?

Don't think so; they qualify as shields.
Starfleet can't develop/use cloaking shields because of some treaty with the Romulans.

But instead of blowing them up, why not just steal all their technology, use all their resources, and find out what they are up to from their mission logs. Besides, the ships can be repaired and used in time of battles against their creators. hehehe

The borgs always seem to be indestructable. So instead of using ray guns, why don't they just build a handheld transport controller that can transport only the fleshy parts somewhere else on the ship? I mean, can the borg adapt to that?

I missed that show . . . I can understand Picard shaving his head for style BUT his hair doesn't grow on top in the series . . . you'd think male pattern baldness would be an undesirable genetic flaw that would be eliminated in the future.

<< you can't transport through shields >>

Why would you have to?

The imaginary shields don't follow the contours of the imaginary ship so technically there would be plenty of space between the shields and ship that you could beam somebody to. That's why the writers always make sure that the transporters are down whenever the ship is attacked, just like Ameesh said.

BTW, my wife watches Star Trek. :Q:p

And why not transport them directly into the warp core? (or some other part of the ship that would equal instant death)

"The transporters are down" - what an excuse. . . . I guess Roddenberry never figured on the "transporter wars". Anyway, if it became a weapon, there would be a counter-weapon that prevented a "fix".

Maybe Star Trerk can explore this for this . . . think the writers read this forum? :)
