I took a short vacation to central N.Y. ~ finger lakes region to visit relatives, on sunday my son wanted to find a book store and while driving around we saw a used textbook shop, as we were walking up to the door I saw a pile of boxes and trash, weird stuff like a 4 foot tall wine bottle and manikin parts

One box caught my eye, I saw the edge of a laptop with an empty bay(later found out it was a battery bay)

I thought "cool, a busted laptop" at the very least it would be something to screw around with, and maybe some good parts.

I opened it up expecting to see a broken screen, it was filthy but not broken so I took it back to where we were staying and looked it over, it had no battery and no power brick so I couldnt start it, I pulled all the carts and found a 30gig hd, 2x128mb ddr266mhz, celeron 2.ghz and a dvd/rw all in good shape.

I took the cooling fan out and pulled massive chunks of lint out of the cooler and hoped that maybe some idiot threw it away cause it wouldnt run, but I couldnt try it yet.

Yesterday my brother in law borrowed a brick from his work and when I got back to their place last night the thing was sitting on the table, running fine :D

It had a terrifying picture of ludichris for wallpaper and 15gigs of various pop rap, and limewire was installed, found two infected files with a w32 worm (nugache) and 5gigs of p-ron...

I cleared out a bunch of crap, all the mp3 and docs , temp internet/history crap, didnt have time to delete the pron, that may take a while...

There are about 8 keys on the keyboard that dont work but the on screen keyboard works well enough for now.

all I need is a battery and/or a power brick, maybe a keyboard, and a gig of cheap memory and I got a nice little knockaround laptop.

Cliffs.....

1: found laptop in trash
2: cleaned it, got it working.
3: ???
4: Profit!

prove me wrong but i think taking from residential/commercial trash is illegal, unless it was labeled "free stuff"

Looks like a good dedicated server laptop. Attach it to some external storage and serve some media.

Kill joy.

i'm just saying.
i have nothing against it.

my friend found an xbox 360 with the drive tray ripped out, he later got a red light on his own console, i did the drive transplant for him, and the garbage 360 works like a charm now (but banned now, i modded the firmware for him as well)

I found a video tape inside a rental cabin once while I was visiting my relatives up in Central N.Y. A bunch of my friends and I watched it... and then people started dying.

Good luck!

I didnt consider the legality, never have, if someone abandons stuff at the curb I assume they put it there so someone would come and take it away.

say a bike is on the curbside, not locked to any poles, is it free for the taking?

don't get me wrong, i completely agree with you, i am just saying it may be illegal, and exercise caution when you do it. (as in dont do it in front of cops)

Strawman much? Garbage on the curb is fair game. Put a bike on the pile and it is free too.

You're thinking "GARAGE SALE" there buddy. The free stuff box> the junk that did not sell.

I'd expect it to be that way anywhere, but then government need not make sense. I figure that once something is put out for the trash, the owner has decided that said material is of no further value. Why place ownership on something valueless?

Got a 6500mah battery for $30.00 shipped, manually sniped that one in the last ten seconds :D

Got the brick for $29.00 new oem dell piece

Got the keyboard for $25.00 shipped

Still looking for the best deal on ram, looks like a gig of ddr 333 is around $70.00 shipped, ddr2 is cheaper but wont work in the 1100, anyone know if the 1100 can take 2 1gb sodimms?
