First one had little to do with the wind, the people were just allowed to be too damn close. The New Haven police station is just about a block away from the Coliseum, they probably had to evacuate the entire place for a few hours while the dust settled.
I was kind of sorry to see the place go. I had not been there is ages and it was one of the worst designed structures in history (the ramps to the parking garage and the escalator to the roof were legendary), but man, I have a lot of great memories associated with that place. I saw tons of concerts, hockey games and other events there over the years. There was a liquor store right across the street, a great bar right around the corner and some of the best pizza on earth 5 minutes away. Before Ticketmaster the box office there used to sell the concert tickets and sleeping out there to get good seats was a rite of passage. The coldest I ever was in my life was one night sleeping out there. We were all in sleeping bags with sterno inside being careful not to set ourselves on fire, beer was freezing in the bottle, we had to keep it in the coolers so it would stay liquid. That was some night, 6 or 7 years later we were still sleeping out for tickets and people were still talking about that one night. Got 5th row floor center, so it was worth it.
