Dumb computer audio question

Ok, lets say for some stupid reason you want to play music but you don't want it to be output you want it to input like a mic would. I know you can take a cable from your output and plug it into the line-in outlet but is there anyway to do this via some kind of software? Do you even understand what I am asking? And yes, I am that stupid.

Also is there a name for this type of conversion? I tried google for about an hour with no luck lastnight. :/

set your recording source to "system mix" or "stereo mix" in audio properties, it should do what you want.
