Dumb Audio Question

I just got a set of Seinheisser PC165s and they come with either a USB connector or a 3.5" connector. Is there any benefit to using one over the other?

Depends on the quality of the digital-to-audio conversion in the soundcard / motherboard. If it's good, a normal headphone jack is good.

If it's noisy or crackly the USB connection could be better since it sends a digital signal to the phones. I've heard of problems with skips/stalls/dropouts over USB though, especially through a hub instead of a direct connection to the PC.

Try the phone jack, see if you likes it.

One slight advantage is that you don't need to install any new software, I'm guessing the phones came with a CD to make the USB work.

I think they were suggesting you decide which sounds better to you. You don't need someone experienced in the given field to tell you that.

I've already explained the potential technical differences (DAC, noise, USB stuttering).

The only other difference is, as Crescent13 and both I noted, to actually listen both ways and see which sounds better to you.
