That game will never be released. It is vaporware. That game was first promised in 1998 right?
 
They were waiting for Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 to come out so they could license BOTH the D3 and Source engines and add content lacking in both of the other games for the ultimate gaming experience.

I tried to keep the faith and stay optimistic about this franchise for a long time. Until maybe 2001. At this point I find it very hard to believe the game is coming. id has developed two entire game engines (Q3 and D3) since this game was under development, as has Lith (The Little Developer That Could). This game has ostensibly been in development for something like seven years.
 
A game delayed for 2,3,4 years usually means it was either continuing to fail expectations or was incomplete and they needed more time to get it done.

A game delayed for 7+ years means the product they had was utter crap, and new games continuously sent them back to the drawing board due to it's lack of innovation.

From what I've read, it seems like 3drealms had a version of this game essentially complete using (um, I forget if it was with the Quake 2 engine or with the Unreal engine), but it was so subpar that they submarined the game and decided to redesign everything. And that's where they are today, in a constant state of starting from page 1.
 
if i remember correctly, they started the game with unreal 1 engine, then sometime down the road, they switch to a diffrent engine, or maybe it was quake 3 engine and they switch over to unreal 1 engine. i know it somewere along that line.

No, they originally licensed the Quake 2 engine, then moved to the Unreal engine in 1999 or so. My understanding is that the license they signed allows them access to the rolling upgrades (in terms of networking, graphics, etc.) that have been integrated into the Unreal engine over the years.

This is what we call, "vaporware".

Such a shame too, because I'd so been looking forward to DNF. But, there are other games to play...

I believe I was 11 years old when Duke Nukem 3D was released. I just turned 20 on Monday. Ridiculous? Quite.
 
While the complaints about delays are certainly more than justified, this game isn't going to be vaporware forever....people were saying that about HL2 not that long ago as well, and the development time on that game was nearly as long as DNF.

George Brussard has chimed in on more than one occasion about the game's status.

I'm going to guess next year around E3...

Unreal 3 isn't coming out until 2006 at the earliest- there will be other shooters out before that!

E3 next year should be fun as the run of "been in development for years" games are all out now, so we'll finally get to see some new stuff...

FEAR is the next great shooter, though Stalker will likely be released first. FEAR is amazing - Monolith is making it.

ha! are you joking .. a Riva TNT could play this game by the looks of the graphics ... the game looks horrible .. 1990ish
 
I have been playing a beta version for about 5 weeks now. It rocks. Defintely worth the wait. This game will revolutionize the way we think about games.
