Since DNF and Borderlands were both developed by Gearbox, lets compare their requirements.

Borderlands:

2.4 GHz Pentium 4 Processor
1GB system RAM
NVIDIA Geforce 8600 GS
ATI Radeon HD3000 Series
8 GB of hard disk space

Duke Nukem Forever:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.4 Ghz / AMD Athlon 64 X2 @ 2.6 Ghz
Memory: 2 Gb
Hard Drive: 10 Gb free
Video Memory: 512 MB
Video Card: nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS / ATI Radeon HD 3850

Borderlands is a great looking game, so maybe DNF will be look just as good as Borderlands, hopefully better.

One of the big differences that I see between Borderlands and DNF, it looks like DNF is designed for at least a dual core CPU, while Borderlands was designed for an older pentium 4.

I am wondering why Dx11 is not listed though. Dx11 might still be a little new, but I wonder why a major game like DNF is not going to utilize the latest technology?

Keep in mind that Gearbox just finished the game. The graphics engine is probably the same as whatever 3D Realms was using when they went out of business. According to wikipedia, that would be a heavily modified version of Unreal 2.5.

The cry for DX11 is overblown in my opinion. It's great and all and it'll be cool when people use it, but a game that looks good and and is fun shouldn't lose points just because they didn't implement DX11. Not to say DNF is garaunteed to be good just it's not going to be bad just because they don't have dx11.

I'm not really up on all whats new or not but 2.5 would be an older version wouldn't it? Considering 3D Realms has been out of business for a while.

Unreal 2.5 was released back in 2005/2006. They made the switch around the same time, and they were actively working on it during this time. The game Gearbox is releasing is pretty much what 3D Realms had at the time of the studio's closure, except for some extra polishing.

So the game is being released 5 - 6 years behind the times?

I just hope gearbox did a good job on polishing DNF. If DNF looks just as good as Borderlands, and maybe a little bit better, then I will be happy.

As soon as DNF goes up for pre-purchase on Steam, its going in my account. Gearbox did a pretty good job with Borderlands. Maybe they learned from their mistakes and made improvements in DNF.

Good. Maybe it will look good, without all those stupid effects that just make newer engines look ugly and reduce framerates.

i've read black ops is essentially the original call of duty engine from 5-6 years ago with some modifications along the way

Whoa, whoa whoa!

These are way higher than for Duke Nukem 3D, what the hell? New engine or something?

Sorry couldn't resist.

The engine in Black Ops is a moderately customized descendant of the engine used in CoD 4. That engine is a heavily customized decedent of the engine used in CoD2. And in turn, that engine is a very heavily tweaked and improved decedent of the good old Quake 3 engine.

DNF is a good reason to finally upgrade that 486 your still using. Maybe its time up upgrade to a Pentium?

There is a new CPU out by some company called AMD, its been getting good reviews on SharkyExtreme. These new AMD chips are supposed to cost less then an Intel, and be just as good.

I thought that the CoD engine was based off of id Tech 4.

proberly the same reason the hardware is on the lower side for current gen hardware.

either it is only touched up from the previous developer's long development cycle,

or

It has a touch of consolitizes.

Not a game I am buying for graphics though, so not expecting that to be too bad, but it will come down to the demo and the control interface. If that is stuffed, I might have to pass on it

Your first assumption is correct. The game is not consolized. It's a 2006/2007 PC game being released in 2011. In fact, it was ported from PC to consoles after 3D Realms realized that FPS had become popular on them.

Yeah, like we haven't heard stuff like that dozens of times before. I won't believe the PC was anything but a careless afterthought until I play it, because developers seem to love nothing more than to lie about the effort they put into the PC version of their games.

Ummmm... 3DRealms has never done a console game.

This may be the last big PC game.
