Duke Nukem Forever is going to suck!

I got curious as to how it's coming along and they are still a long ways off from getting it completed. I saw some screenshots here but if you look at them the characters and enviornments are very boxy looking. Part of that would be because they are building the game on the dated unreal engine.

3D Realms is taking way too long to release the game, and it looks like it's going to just be another Daikatana... The game is promising so many things but it looks like when the game finally comes out it's going to be very crappy.

That's it for my DNF rant... I hate to see a good game get delayed so long that it loses much of what would have made it great :(

Those screen shots look pretty damn cool to me. Maybe my standards are too low. But yeah, about taking too long, that does suck. There is the temptation to keep incorporating later and later technology, which pushes the release date farther and farther into the future in what should be called a death spiral.

I almost spit my drink out...those screenshots are dated November 1999.

Way to go 3dRealms!!!! Tip: Quit while you're ahead!!!

Prey actually got picked up by a developer! We might actually be seeing it.

My money is that DNF is dead. There's a "media blackout" in effect, and they didn't even have screenshots at e3. Don't look foreward to it...

Boxy looking?

Regardless if it is or if it ain't, it is GAMEPLAY that makes a great game with long legs....Spelled addon packs and a group of diehard followers, not graphics!

There are lots of great looking games, but few great playing games. Duke Nukem 3D is still unsurpassed in single player mode imho. I still play it on my laptop.

Daikatana had neither graphics or playability.

Half Life; nuff said.

The guy in Half Life doesn't get the chicks though, nor does he have awesome one-liners.

That still doesn't make DN3D a better single player game than HL.

True, but what does it say about a game coming out that can't even be bothered to brush up it's graphics? Gameplay is important but polish is also important. I need to enjoy looking at the game I'm playing.

i think maybe its taking so long because they are waiting for them to make a new evil dead movie so they can get more cool one liners :p

I honestly would not be suprised. It's taken so long and there have been so many changes I could see the game being cancelled but 3D realms not saying anything because they don't want egg on their face.

I could not say, those bastards still have yet to fix that bug-ridden P.O.S. (Half-Life) enough with their patches so that I can play it all the way through. :disgust:

I'm afraid it does. :D Duke3d was fun as hell to play. Half life was cool and serious, but after playing it through once it was boring. Duke never got boring, and it was very very very interactive for the time.

Those screenshots are 2 years old, at least. Take a look at the DNF E3 2001 video for a more realistic view of what the game will be like. And from what i've been reading, the graphics in that movie are even outdated!

Personally I don't care how long they take on the game, as long as they do it right. I'd much rather play a "HELL YES THIS IS KICK ASS" game over a "<yawn> isn't this the last level YET?". Yes technically this game has been in development for 5 years years, but as long as its good, who cares? Its not hurting you if they take their time and do it right.

Maybe so but if they can't even stick with one plan of attack for the game and need to keep changing everything there is something wrong with the development and I worry for what the final product will be.

I thought I had read somewhere that they were not going to use the UnReal engine, but were going with their own now, or possibly the DOOM 3 engine.

They changed engines once (from Quake2 to Unreal) back in 1999, and have been using the same engine since. I don't see that as constantly changing everything. ATM single player is just about done, and they are working on perfecting multiplayer (maps, bots, weapon balancing, etc). I think that they skipped E3 because they are at the final stretch of production and don't want to lose their momentum. I am quite confident that they game will be released this year.

I thought that when a game was getting close to coming out companies started advertising it every place they could so people would save their money and buy it. With such a high profile game like DNF, if they were close to finishing I guarantee they would have had at least their marketing department at the show pimping the game. This is not a title 3D Realms wants to sit on and suprise the world with... they will have a huge marketing campaign when the game is even remotely close to finished.

I still have some computer game magazine around here somewhere from a couple of years ago that had DNF as the cover story, and they said to expect it out by the end of the year. :disgust:

EDIT: On an semi-related note, what is Duke Nukem: The Manhatten Project?
