Seligman is now notorious. He's been suspended from school, will never recover his reputation, and I imagine has already burned through high 4-figures in legal fees no counting what it took to secure his bail.

No problem, we're even. All of those problems dissapear, to the people that matter, if his alibi is what they are claiming, as long as he doesn't go to trial.

My understanding is that they didn't have all the physical evidence until after the warrants had been issued. He was going to get indicted by the grand jury anyway, no opportunity for that evidence to be presented.

From what I understand, both Seligman and Finnerty switched representation after the indictments were handed down. Before they were sharing an attorney with other players.

If you were an attorney representing several players, all of whom were flatly denying any criminal activity at the party, why would you single out any one of your clients? Most of these attorneys expressed surprise that anyone was indicted at all.

And what makes you think the DA was even listening to what the players were saying? (According to what I've heard, the players were actively trying to tell their version of events and the police were either not interested or had decided they'd heard enough. They were apparently only interested in someone who wanted to incriminate a teammate.)

I am not of the belief that all DA's, or attorneys for that matter, are honest do gooders who only want justice.. some of them are media whores too... They have prejudices and biases etc..

I have no desire to become a defense attorney nor am I particularly suited to become one. I have more than two living brain cells, I know who both my parents are and I refuse to lie for a living. You seem particularly well suited, though.

kylef - DV's post wasn't about adding anything to the topic. It was about him still being mad because I caught him and his mommy in a lie a few months ago and he thought I should be permanently banned and I wasn't.

Re-reading this thread after all these years, it's pretty sad now how wrong several people here were about the entire case.

Pretty much everything I predicted here turned out to be true:
- DA Nifong's handling of this case was extremely inappropriate
- the allegations were later shown to be completely false, and the students were not violent rapists at all (or even racist, for that matter)
- the outrage demonstrated by the Durham community was severe and exacerbated by Nifong and other panderers who wanted to use this case for political purposes
- many who already resented Duke used it as an excuse to believe the worst about the school (the comments made here by UNC student BabyBaliDoc are a great example)

What I didn't expect was that Duke sadly made some horrendous decisions about how they treated these students, including dismantling the top-rated lacrosse program, suspending the 3 students who were charged with no hearing, etc. Apparently these decisions were made primarily by the Duke President, who caved into political pressure from protest groups more interested in their own narrative than seeking justice. Worst of all was the "Group of 88" professors, which you can read about on Wikipedia. To this day, none of these professors have apologized for what they did. Sad.

EDIT: I remember the case in a general way but I completely forgot/never heard of this 'Group of 88'. Interesting that the "African American studies" department was apparently the biggest supporter of this. Amusing especially considering that white-on-black rape is practically non-existent in the USA. But hey, how else are people like that going to keep their jobs if they can't invent scandal and sensation to fit their little political fetish?

Nope. I remembered this old thread, so I looked it up. I thought it would be interesting to show a historical view of some people's rush to judgment on these subjects, seeing as how mob protests against alleged social injustice are the cause du jour, facts notwithstanding.

In addition, we now know what actually happened in this case, whereas at the time this thread originally ended, the case was still pending and many believed the allegations. Revisiting to update it seems justifiable to me for that reason alone.
