I just bought a P4 3.06 w/ HT and I opened up Sandra and it told me this:

Warning W234 - You are using a Hyper-Threaded system on an Operating System that either does not support HT or does not support the total number of logical CPUs of the system. Thus Hyper-Threading is not properly utilised. You may as well disable it.
Fix: Make sure you are using the right Hyper-Threading kernel or update your Operating System for HT support (use Windows XP/2003 or later). Do note that some Operating Systems and software have licensing limits that may prevent you from using all CPUs or you may be in violation of your licence.

WTF? Do I really have to upgrade to WinXP? I wouldn't have bought this cpu if I had known that!:|:(

i can not see any difference in day to day use with HT enabled or disabled on my P4 2.8 so if you want to stick with Windows 2K i probably won't be a bgi deal

You pretty much hit it on the head. Win2000 is not fully HT-aware, it will try to treat the second "CPU" as a physical one, from what I've read. Sorry dude :(

I'm the opposite. At home i have a 3200XP system, and at work a 2.8HT system... and i can definitely tell how much better the HT system is for daily use when you have multiple windows open. I love it, and is one of the reasons why my next system will be an HT.

I have a AMD 64 3000+ in adition to the P4 2.8 and i can not tell the difference between the two wether or not HT is enabled. I do notice that i have a gaming perfromance increase in the 3000+ though. I don't really multi task expcept for maybe some mp3 playing a couple internets open and a word document opened. When ever i do anything like gamiong i close everything else down.

HT is the primary reason to change from 5.0 to 5.1. Makes a huge difference in WMV HD, for whatever that is worth. Plus you get ClearType and better multi-monitor support.

Well, if you don't do anything multithreaded/multitasked, then of course you won't see a difference.
Isn't that like saying "I can't see any difference between my regular satellite receiver and a High Def receiver... Although I never tune into any HD stations."

Personally, it is very rare that my PC isn't multitasking, so I really dig HT. :)

Well heck, if you don't multitask, then of course you won't see the benefits. I always have half a dozen browsers open, as well as Outlook, Azureus, and other stuff, and definitely notice a difference. I haven't owned an Intel CPU since the 300a Celerons, but my next CPU will probably be an HT. I really did think HT was bunk until i actually started using it.

I've been haveing the same problem and doing a lil research on it.

If you re-install you Win 2k it will detect the threaded prossesor during install.

I am still looking into messing up the registry to see if that might do anything, an di still have about 1000 pages to go searching though.

I noticed a big difference when I enabled HT on my winxp system. My dvd software would crash! :) I had to get a more recent version of powerdvd that work in HT. But overall HT is definately worth it as I multitask like a maniac.
