My motherboard doesn't accept 3 sticks of ram. So I had to take out 2 sticks of 256 and leave the 512 in. But if I get another slice of 512 it will work as duel channel right?

It should, but you might want to try to find the same kind of RAM or it may very well not operate in dual channel.

How does dual channel work? I just insert the sticks into the slot and they will work automatically?

The duel channel isn't working. When ever I inserted the 2 sticks the computer won't boot. I had to insert the 2 sticks into slot number 1 and 3 instead of 1 and 2. Now it only works as single channel.
