There's a point there. I get mine at costco, and I decided some time ago to replace all my white socks, white jockey style shorts and white T shirts at the same time, getting 12 of each. That would work. In reality, I'm not holding to it. I'm not really having a problem distinguishing the newer ones from the older ones, though. Presently, I'm mostly keeping them in clean 5 gallon plastic pails. I know, not very chi chi, but it works.
One tip: I used to have my white underwear fade to gray pretty quickly. What I've done that prevents this:
1. Always wash whites separately.
2. I buy a bucket of Oxyclean at Costco, and add a full scoop to each load of whites. What I do is mix that scoop well with 1 gallon of warm water and pour it over the undies a minimum of 6 hours before I wash them (I have my own washer).
The undies stay nice and white for a real, real long time now. I used to buy new ones just because the old ones looked really dingy. No longer.

Oh, and when no longer good to wear it becomes a rag (the T shirts and socks).
