Update: Dude.....SETI is crunching on the Dell....and it's first victim is around 2:58 (at 28 %)....so it's nice...and dang, this thing is quiet! :Q

128Megs of PC2700 DDR from Crucial will be added later this week! :D

more...more...more! :Q

(Sadly, an XP1600 will leave in a few weeks! :( )

:Q

I've got the Dell P4 2.4GHz 533MHz FSB with 128Megs PC2700, 40G 7200 rpm drive, GF4 MX 64Meg card, 10/100 LAN, XP Home edition, 48X CD-ROM and 15 Inch LCD Monitor in my checkout cart from the hot deals forum for $578.00 shipped after $100 rebate. My wife said I could get it but had to sell one 17" monitor and XP1600 system. I could probably get around $250 for the other system if I try hard. Help me...is this worth it? It seems to be agreat deal to me......HELP!!!! MORE WU's crunched?

more...more...more! :Q

Well...most 15" LCD monitors are 300 dollars and the 2.4 P4 533 is $190 on Pricewatch...so that's $490.00 for those items. On top of that, you get 128M PC2700, Motherboard (don't know brand), case, power supply, floppy drive, 48x CD-ROM, 40G 7200 RPM drive, GeForce4 MX 64meg card + XP-HOME!

Darnit...I'm going to get the CC! :Q

I usually don't buy a pre-built system, but what the hell! :Q

Looks like a nice system, but 128Mb RAM won't do much more than run SETI.

:D

I'll upgrade it after I sell one of my XP1600 systems! :D

Maybe 256 or 512MB PC2700! :D

Not sure about the XP Home stuff...may need industrial strength! :D

more..more...more! :Q

Did you order it yet? :D Actually, not sure if it will actually put out a lot more WUs or not, since I'm doubting you can OC it. My 1600+ @ 166fsb seems to be doing typical .417's in around 3:15... what's the expected output on the 2.4B?

Another point to ponder: even i845G and i845E chipsets don't actually run the RAM at PC2700 speeds, they run it at PC2100 speeds "officially" (meaning, by Intel's design). And "officially" is how I'd expect Dell to set them up, unlike most aftermarket boards that give you the option to bump to 333MHz. Or does it have the new i845GE or PE chipset...? Those do run the RAM at PC2700.

Ditto what MechBgon said. Dude stick with the AMD :) The Dell will be either an Intel or SuperMicro board. They aren't the best overclockers in the world. Plus the P4s with the great 2-3 hr WU times are RDRAM not DDR. If you want a flat panel, look for a good deal on one of those but I would stick with the AMD.

Your getting the dell buddy!

<conspiricy mode>
Buy the dell and hide the 1600+. Then sell the LCD for $250 and then pull back out the 1600+ Tell your wife you traded the LCD for a "new" 1600+ :D

Rarely will I even consider purchasing a name brand system as there's likely to be some proprietary "feature" in the system that will preclude the possibility of upgrades later. Having worked as a tech in a computer store and having had to explain the short-comings of those proprietary systems to people who bring them in for "upgrades", buying the Dell isn't a choice I'd likely make.

If you're not sure, break down the list of components and see how much more it would cost to put it together yourself. Also, keep in mind that with Christmas just around the corner, and the economy the way it is, you're going to see LOTS of super deals on computer systems, so now may not really be the best time to plunk down the cash. ;)

Well, as slow as the XP1600 system that I would be selling is, the Dell couldn't be slower. The K7AMA board is dog slow compared to the other boards. I runs around the 4:45 to 5:00 mark average...which is sucky compared to the others. The L7SOM and the ECS KT266A (don't remeber model) run around 4:00 (for L7SOM) and 3:45 (for KT266A) boards. I don't overclock...don't know why...just never felt the urge. Like Evadman said...if the Dell sucks...sell it for a nice price or sell the LCD and make up the difference. I will say the wife loves the LCD's (as do I) so the Dell would go out before the LCD. :)

I may hate this impulse decision....only time will tell! :)

I would bet that I could sell the system intact for what I paid for it without much trouble though ;)

I will keep everyone update! :D

Well, you have a point on those ALi boards, they're not known for good performance. For the record, my 1600+ overclock was as simple as doinking the FSB to 166MHz in the BIOS (well, and I bumped the voltage a tad, from 1.75V to 1.80V). No fancy cooling involved either :D You could do that with most KT333 boards, such as an EPoX 8K3A+, if you get your hands on one and update the BIOS if necessary.

Anyway, enjoy the new rig, and the sweet monitor too :D

As I type away on this Planar 15" LCD...I can't wait. They are a tad smaller (Diag) than a 17" monitor, but they are so bright and nice! :)

Maybe not good for games.....(19" will do for that), but great for everyday playing and surfing. Oh, and the Dell wouldn't be used for much more than surfing and paperwork anyway....I may even rob the GeForceMX (which was only $20.00 more than the Rage 32 that came with the Dell originally) and move it to another :)

:)

Sounds like a bargain to me, that system would probably be £700 in the UK ($1000)..

:(

I think its definately a good deal
even if you take the monitor, proc, ram, video, hdd, etc out of it and toss the case and (proprietary?) motherboard, you would still be getting a good deal
