I was leaving Publix today and some dude drove up to me in the parking lot and said that he had some speakers. He said he had an delivery cancel and wanted to know if i wanted to take them. Anyone ever have this happen to you? This is probably the 4th or so time it has happened to me, so i know hes lying to me. Just wondering what type of scam this is, and if it has ever happened to anyone else before. I could see the speaker boxes and they said DCS on them.. Didnt take them of course... Any ideas?

It's a scam, they'll usually try and tell you they're some super high quality speakers worth 2-4x what he's asking. In reality, they're low quality speakers worth about 1/2 what he's asking.

Would he let you test them at all? Open it up and look inside at the material quality? I'm sure they're crap...

dont laugh at me, but about 4 years ago, as a kid, I fell for this. I bought a pair 2' tall, dual 6" inch speakers for about 150 bucks. Same story as what you described, but it was a white van, as is more common.

The speakers are actually, surprisingly good quality. They weigh about 40 pounds each, nice thick cabinets, are bi-amp capable, and the sound is pretty good. Not audiophile quality, but definity a good second set.

edit: Im sure they werent "good" speakers, they appear to be a good commercial copy of acoustic research's speaker. Were the parts worth 150? no way. Are they worthless? No.

ok, here is the scam.

after you pay for the speakers, and are reaching in for them, the guy hits you on the head, and then pushes you into the van........

after that, you just hope for a quick death!

Yeah, what is the actual scam? I've had this happen to me several times..usually goes something like:

Them: "Hey dude, check out these speakers we got. Boss loaded us up and said to get rid of them for whatever we could get...you interested?"

Me: "No thanks."

Them: "Come on dude, this is a great deal...at least take a look at them."

Me: "Do you guys actually think you're the first to approach me with this scam? F*ck off."

Them: "What?! It's no scam dude (they always call you "dude") these are a great deal."

Me: already driving away in car.

Anyone actually have the skinny on this? I'm curious.

Haha...These guys in College Park, MD tried to pull the same scam on me. It was hilarious how hard these guys tried to sell me these speakers. When I was said no I dont wanna buy them, the guys says to his partner "Aww Come on. This guy is cool lets give him a break." It was such an obvious scam I just started laughing at the guys.

Whats the scam? I see no scam. I merely see a guy selling stolen merchandise out of the back of his truck.

When I was approached by them they tried to make believe they may be hot. Ie. alluding they may be stolen high-end speakers in order to sell them - justifying why they are in the back of a van. In fact they are often NOT stolen.

I've read dissections of these speakers which state that some don't sound half bad, ie. like $150 speakers... except they usually try to scam several hundred bucks from the purchaser.

Something similar happend to me in Butler Plaza, but the van was white and older model (unmarked). They didn't say they were for sale though, just for me to take a few (there were a lot in there). It didn't seem right at all so I just got in my car and left.

I was offered this "deal" in the circuit city parking lot in Gaithersburg, MD and also in the Checkers drive through in Huntsville, AL. I think one time it was the explorer or blazer can't remember the other time. The "deal" was for car speakers and they fed me a line like they got overstock or somesuch (uh wouldn't they just sell them at the store in the bargain bin?) anyway i figured they were stolen and the 2 guys looked/acted kinda shady.

This happened to me once too, but they pulled up next to me while driving.

They were trying to sell me speakers at 50mph.

When I said no, they pulled up next to the guy in front of me and did the same thing.

It was rather humorous.

I had a pickup truck at lights offer me 4 wheels for my accord from an accord LXI. I said no and they laughed knowingly. Guy I know was getting waved at and spoken too driving - guy in vehicle wanted to sell stereo equipment - guy I know wasn't up for that - which was great because cops promptly came out of nowhere and pulled over the guy trying to sell.
