I think that was more of an instinctive move. Maybe trying to get her into a headlock despite being lifted up in the air.

His arm is loose around her. When someone grabs me from behind I don't reach back and loop my arm around them, I try to elbow them in the face. Plus, he starts setting up even before she has a firm grasp of him. Just looks extremely fake to me.
