I remember the "duck and cover" drills in school when I was a kid...we had to watch the cheesy movies as well...like hiding under your desk will really make any difference in a nuk-u-lur attack...but, the guvmint had to calm the sheep somehow during the early years of the cold war, so they told everyone that simple tricks like that and back yard bomb shelters would make life sustainable...then they built Cheyenne Mountain for themselves...

Does anyone know of websites documenting the proper procedure for this? I remember reading about this a few months ago but I lost the website. Did Google for a while but came up with no results.

That was one of those "feel good" tactics that did nothing but make people feel more secure. South Park covered it well in their volcano episode.

Heh, I was just going to post about that episode. Was pretty funny.

Actually, there's a 50's or 60's newsreal that shows soldiers in a trench training for battle on the nuclear battlefield... It's amazing to watch. It's on some archive site on the internet. What I remember of it: the soldiers are crouched in the trench, nuclear bomb goes off. Later, they brush off the soldiers with wisk brooms to help remove the radioactive fallout. (I'll guess that years later, those soldiers had higher than usual incidents of cancer.)

The basic idea is you hide under something to avoid debris so instead of dying painlessly you die from radiation poisoning

Nah..... If you're far enough away, you've got at least a few seconds before the shockwave traveling at the speed of sound hits you, and even more time before the thermal shockwave traveling at 400MPH hits you. ;)

There were people in my old neighborhood who actually HAD working bomb shelters installed,
this was serious stuff back in early 60's, the Cuban missile crisis scared the CRAP out of a lot
of people..
