It looks awesome, but they'd better hope that this talk about global warming and rising ocean waters is just fiction or overly dire predictions.

Much better than the rest of the Middle East. I am sure they will be first in line for handouts when oil profits plummit.

Sadly, since Dubai is just a tiny country and since they're in the Middle East, presumably, eventually they'll get overrun by nearby hordes of Islamicist barbarian hordes, especially if they're sympathetic to the U.S. and the Western world.

Sigh so much ignorance in this thread.

"your gas dollars hard at work" ????

irwincur is right. Dubai is much *much* smarter than most (not going to say all, because Isreal has a good tech sector as well.... Pentium-M anyone?) of the middle east.

Dubai, while not truly a "free" country, and far behind the U.S. freedom wise (though we aren't truly free either of course) is not backwards-thinking like much of the middle east. At all.

They realized that oil isn't going to be around forever and that they need to diversify.

Which is why, if you look at the middle eastern countries and what % of their GDP comes from oil......You will note that UAE is in a great position, and it is only getting better. It is not that they are "friendly" to the west, it is just that they are friendly to business and don't actively try to alienate people. They realize that good relations with the world is good for them and one size doesn't fit all. I do not believe (unless it has changed) that foriengers can own property, BUT as you have seen, that has changed in some areas of the country. There is a large tech sector there. And it is growing.

And car insurance, from what I hear, is cheap--based on whether or not your car is 2 door or 4, with 2 being more expensive but still much cheaper than what you would pay here in the states. So I hear on the car forums these days anyway. Many people are getting jobs over there or choosing UAE as their tourist destination. They have some of hte nicest hotels in the world. Yet they still have islamic laws, etc. Yet if the rest of the middle east were as sensible as they are, we would have no problems over there.

I thought the point of these projects (and their other major building projects) was to help sustain their economy when the oil does run out?

It is. Their economy is only 40% oil based. Next year it should be 32%.

Is that for the UAE as a whole? Wikipedia says Dubai's GDP is 6% oil based.
