The massive construction projects currently in Dubai have required more construction workers than there are citizens of the city (note: over 80% of Dubai's population consists of expatriates/non-citizens). This has led to massive importation of low-wage workers, mostly from India and Pakistan.[7] Most of these workers are forced to give up their passports upon entering Dubai, making it very difficult to return home. NPR reports that workers "typically live eight to a room, sending home a portion of their salary to their families, whom they don't see for years at a time." Others report that their salary has been withheld to pay back loans, making them little more than indentured servants.[8] The BBC has reported that "local newspapers often carry stories of construction workers allegedly not being paid for months on end. They are not allowed to move jobs and if they leave the country to go home they will almost certainly lose the money they say they are owed. The names of the construction companies concerned are not published in the newspapers for fear of offending the often powerful individuals who own them.".[9]

I don't trust it, and therefore would never set foot on it...even if I could afford to.

This must have come from misappropriated terrorist funding. ;)

Deplorable? Where were you when South Asian countries such as Singapore imported cheap labor from Bangladesh and other countries to build their infrastructure.
Its nothing new. Labor is cheap as heck in most of asia.

I am from Dubai but currently in Indiana, at Indiana University in Bloomington studying accounting /finance!

Just visited there 3 months ago. I can provide with some info i guess. Yes, you can say that half the city is under construction because most of what you see there is to be called the New Dubai as the king has ordered an expansion to the city of Dubai to be twice as big as the current Dubai.

No, thats not smog. Morning mist maybe.......don't know much myself. But dubai has mostly been a hot and clean country

Yes, one of the reason, Dubai is doing this is so that they don't have to survive on Oil when it runs out, which is what is expected to happen in the next 20-30 years. But realize this that Dubai is like one of the states in America, and there are 7 of them in UAE, the capital being Abu-Dhabi, which has plenty and plenty of Oil reserves! So dubai has lot of support and backing from the government. Dubai simply chose to not to want its economy to be run by Oil, they chose to build this infrastructure for its present and future.

Thats why living in a kingdom is extremely risky! If you have a good king like the one in Dubai, he will rule until he dies and make the country prosperous and peaceful. BUT but, if you have a bad king, like in some other Middle-eastern countries I wont name, it can turn into a war zone where the government does nothing for the people as they don't have to ,they have oil money! whether good king or Bad king, there is NOTHING anyone can do about getting a king to dethrone.. Thankfully dubai has had some really good kings over the pas few generations.

Fun facts about Dubai: (besides the ones you already know)

Air conditioned prisons served chicken and kebab for meals, lol

Do they gamble there?

Nope, no gambling! thats the only thing. some 1 tried to defy the law that states that there can be no gambling on Dubai soil! thats why about 8 -10 years ago , they built the only 7 star hotel in the world to be marketed as the first casino in the middle east EVER on the sea ( not on dubai soil, haha) to open a casino over there. But after some time that was stopped too, willingly though!

I'm considering going expat to Dubai, or some other less taxed/regulated economy. No income tax in Dubai!
