Damn

As long as you don't get your tongue chopped off for spitting in public or something of the like, I'm there.

I'm sure that has been thought of and dealt with. In that thread someone claimed this is a sign of judgment day in Islam, I wonder if this is true.

I'm sure you get searched or something before you enter that place.

They are using practical slave labor for all this construction. It's deplorable.

"The pictures we see make it seem as if everyone is rich there.
However, half the city looks to be under construction

Construction workers are not rich. Wonder where they sleep."

Compartmentalization would prevent the whole thing from flooding.

8 to a room. construction workers come from India and Pakistan. They surrender their passports when they arrive and can go months without a paycheck. 2007 indeed.

Add to the fact they make more money per unit of labor for oil than a columbian cartel boss....

Richest people in the world making ANYTHING for the cheapest possible price = THAT SH!T IS GONNA LOOK NICE!!

Dubai never had much oil to begin with. That was to their benefit. Rather than thinking it was an unending source of income and pissing it away like most of the arab world did, they built a modern economy from square one. The business of Dubai is business. Oil has never driven their economy.

As for the incredible structures being a smart move, I doubt it. Dubai looks just like Japan did in the 80's and the Pacific rim did in the late 90's. When the wealth of Dubai crashes as these things inevitably do those skyscrapers are going to stand empty or unfinished.

All I think of when I look at Dubai is my awful simcity skills. I'd always build the ridiculous until I ran out of cash.

I was in Dubai when i was 15 and it was nothing like this. Ugh, only if my parents had bought some sort of investment back then..

Glad Dubai is trying to the Hong Kong of the Middle East. Other middle eastern countries should follow (Kuwait used to be good before the Gulf War)

One of the very few places that realize that once the oil is gone or there's alternative - they'll be super f'd in the a. Just checked out some photos a friend sent to me from there - daaaaaaayum.

I just got back from a trip that included three days in Dubai. It was amazing to see in person.
