DualShock 3

Well, I pre-ordered it on eBay and I got it yesterday. Thing is amazing.

I got the white controller, only because it was the only ones left in the eBay store I bought from (egamestar, aka japanvideogames.com). Very reasonable price, total was $65. So $15 markup (includes shipping, markup was only about $5 total, so $10 shipping), very reasonable for an import. The things are going for $75 before shipping now! :Q

as far as the controller itself, very good. Of course, rumble should have been in it from the first place, but the rumble isn't what I am referring to. The build quality is top-notch, absolutely destroys the flimsy piece of crap that was the SixAxis. This thing is sturdy, and the buttons have even been made just a SLIGHT bit better, all over the controller. Barely noticeable, but in some instances you can definitely tell it was improved upon. This is what should have been launched with the console, but given that it wasn't, I am still very happy and it was a good purchase.
Will probably get another one, in black, when they launch in the US. But now I have 3 controllers: 2 SixAxis, 1 DualShock 3/SixAxis.
What's funny, is I have never owned one single electronic that did not have the FCC loco on it somewhere: this controller does not have that (obviously, FCC does not exist in Japan.). None of the logos are the same. Something that amuses me, that's all. 🙂

I want one... but not for 80 smackers. Although I heard it's kind of lame in R&C because they don't make much activate the rumble, but supposedly the rumble is really good in GT5 Prologue Demo.

the rumble is really nice in Uncharted and Motorstorm. Although no rumble for acceleration, just for bumping and general chaos. If only I had the GT5 Prologue demo, because yea, I've heard it makes the best use of rumble yet.

According to posts at Ars it also gives you rumble in PS1 & PS2 games.

I might pick up an import DS3 before the Spring US launch, but I'm not in a big rush.

yep. And Sony released a list of all the downloadable PS1 games that have rumble as well.

edit:
and I am still bummed they didn't include TouchSense. Wouldn't it have been better all around, considering it uses less battery and is apparently cheaper to introduce (iirc)? Don't know who made the decision to stick to old tech, seems kind of like a retarded move. Here Immersion is, hyping their new rumble tech, right about the same time the Sony litigation was wrapping up, quite a few months later Sony reveals rumble tech in their new controller, yet it is using the old tech? hmm

What's so different about it? Sounds like the same controllers that we've always had.

well pretty much its the same as the DualShock 2, except for some seemingly minor but great improvements:
- wireless. duh. 😛
- rumble. duh. 😛 no biggie, except there was a severe lack of it in the original SixAxis.
- solidly built. PlayStation controllers have never been one to feel extremely well made and durable (although they tend to be, deceiving). But now it actually feels like one solid unit that, well hard to explain, feels perfect. especially coming from the SixAxis.
- wider movements for analog sticks.
- every button press has a better feeling movement.
- trigger-like buttons replace the standard L2 (reverse triggers though, they don't curve in like 360 controllers, rather outward slightly)

Heh. $65 for a controller... that's crazy.

Wait, I have a Wii. Damn Nintendo.

lol
yea, the Wii's controller pair is expensive.

and I never said it was a 'deal', well, it is compared to what people are paying to import them now, but the extra $15 is no biggie (over $50). it's worth it for the better build and added weight alone. i don't feel like I'm gonna break the thing by gripping it.

Now the one major question that might justify a purchase on my end once it's released locally is......the battery life. I've gotten so used to playing wirelessly that playing plugged in to charge the controller seems so 2005.

No rumble for acceleration? Maybe I don't want it now 🙁.

I haven't held one, but I'd be willing to bet that the "solid feel" that the controller has is probably just a reaction to the added weight of the motors and battery.

I know I had a similar reaction the first time I played with a DualShock (1).
