Dually Lovin' Finally! Got a question now!!!

Well I finally got my second 800eb yesterday, dropped it in my box here at work fired it up and am in dually lovin' territory!!! 🙂😀😉

This will help in my race methinks!! 😱

A big thanks to LordAccord for the great deal we did. This guy is good to go!!!

Up to today I have been averaging 8hr 26min on the single 800. I use this pc a lot during the weekdays so I am sure that has a tendancy to slow it down some.

I could also do some memory tweaking maybe but I need absolute reliabilty (Office PC) so am willing to sacrafice a little speed for that.

It is the system labeled DungeonMaster here.

🙂

Thanks everybody!

Rich, this is the board I got from you BTW.

Nice and stable, just the way I like them!!! 😉

I believe I will be on the hunt for another dually mb to drop my PIII700/933 on in the near future. 😀

There is just something about seeing peoples reaction when you tell them you are running Dual PIIIs... :Q

1.6g of processing... got to love it!

Welllll I couldn't leave well enough alone..

I know I said I need absolute stability on this machine but I took a chance and bumped both cpus to 858mhz (143x6), default voltage, and she seems to like it a lot... 🙂

Purring along, I have 9 apps up, SETI running 2 processes and the cpu temps are hovering right at 87 F each. Going to leave it running SETI and will check in on it latr tonight. (This pc runs my Q so I don't want it to go down!)

Ahhh that takes me to (counting rapidly) a touch over 1.7gs of cpu power.... wooot!

(Going to mud a job, back in awhile!)

OK I am back from the mud job. System is running fine, temps still at 87 F.

But I have a question... Why does SETI driver all of the sudden show a serious slowdown?? The current WU shows a overall time of 11 hrs+ and I have never seen anything over 8hr 45mins on this machine...

Do I have something setup wrong with Seti?? I have Seti Driver set for 2 processes and it shows that it is processing two units. Do I need to check the processor affinity box???

Something just doesn't seem right here...

LMK please!

thanks

Rob

Well, I've never used seti-driver, but I'll guess the estimated times can be a little high.

As for affinity, this will have negligible impact on the times, and 2 processes is correct.

800eb, haven't these got 256 KB cache? This is your reason for the increased times.
All intel-cpu's with less than 1 MB cache runs slower in seti in multi-cpu. The smaller the cache, the larger increase in times.

Hmmm so maybe I am not going to like SMP as much as I thought... 🙁

I was hoping to maintain my 8.5 hr times but with twice the cpu cycles... Thus going from 2.8 WUs per day to almost 6.

Ah well it still sounds way cool!

Dual PIII 800ebs @ 858mhz 😀

Welcome to smp d00dz 🙂

I have currently 3 dual systems, just can't beat it, perhaps except with a quad system. 🙂

The reason for your slowdown is that now the two CPUs have to share the memory bandwidth to your RAM. If you haven't already done so, you might make sure you have tweaked the memory timings to the fastest levels available in the BIOS. 😀

MechBgon, thanks for the explanation. I'll tweak things as much as possible when I get back to my office and see what happens then.

Postman, thanks, I am really very happy overall and will probably go dually on my home machine soon. 🙂

Ummmm quads... 😀

R😛b

Quad is nice - six way is even better! 😀 Alas, I sold my 6-way PPro 200 ALR box to Rendus a while back so now he's enjoying it. 🙂

That reminds me of the rumor that was going around a while back about PCI-card multiprocessing setups. What was it... Motorola G4's on a PCI card or something? I can't remember the details, but it was fun to think about. 😀
