Dual-Socket Intel LGA771, Can you run with one CPU (ie not use all sockets)?

I cant find any information about this. I know little of Intel's Server CPU market, only that LGA771 can support multi-socket while LGA775 cannot.

I want to get a Quad E5345 2.33GHz Clovertown Active CPU, but seem to have a little snag with budgeting both CPUs in the start (The system will be added to the full rig in the course of 6mo). Heres the Xeon:

Yes, if you put a CPU into socket 0, then you can leave socket 1 empty.

Oh, also, might as well ask now; Is it possible to mix clock speeds? Like if I got the 2.33GHz and later got a 2.66GHz (If not, thats 100% fine, I mean, an 8-Core 2.33GHz system will kill a lot of things)?

The clockspeeds of both chips have to be the same. Dual quad xeons will go through multi threaded apps like butter

If you aren't using multithreaded apps a higher clocked socket 775 system will end up faster (and cheaper). You also are very limited when it comes to overclocking the xeons, which you may want to consider.
