Dual Sempron - Is it possible?

I just have to know if anyone has tried to do the dual Sempron (Socket A) thing yet? If they can, that gives me hope of extending the life of my new motherboard. I've searched google to death and have only found more questions than answers.

OK, now I'm interested in the idea of doing dual sempron 3100+ (optron core) processors, might as well stay with the higher end stuff for upgradability.

I still can't find a darn person who has done either yet on Google. Whatever happened to the old fashioned overclocker who used the cheapest stuff they could get a hold of and overclocked the heck out of it. I still remember the first time I heard about dual celerons. Nearly peed my pants. For the same price of just one pentium II, I could get the motherboard & 2 processors. Those were the days.

Sempron = 754/939 Socket

The only dual socketed motherboards are for the 940 Pin AMD Opterons

might be ...xp's had to be modded to do mp, i suppose its possible. involved hacking bridges if iremember correctly
overclockers.com might have more not sure i see the point, mobile bartons are better for that type of thing. semprons aren't that cheap

A couple of you are overlooking the Socket A based Semprons that are basically rebadged Athlon XPs.

How quickly they forget. :( Socket A is dying but it by no means dead yet.

Probably the same pins need to be modded. Give it a try I say, worse possible situation you have two Seperons, one to sell.

Make sure to cut\paint the proper bridges to change the bus speed to 266.

i think the op might have meant dual core semprons????

if so i doubt they will be on socket 754. a few years down the road when everything goes dual core there might be dual cores with the name sempron... but to hard to tell now.

Jeez, I leave a post for 24 hours and look what you guys have assumed.

I should clear things up. I mean the XP based Socket A Semprons. I had already assumed that it was possible to modify the L5 bridge to enable SMP (multiprocessor capabilities), however, I was hoping someone else had tried it already so that I don't have to worry about buying stuff for no reason.

On a side note, it would be just as cool to use dual Sempron (optron based), but I'm sure that AMD has learned their lesson on leaving too much for public modification.

Actually if you go to newegg and search for motherboards, in one category you will find a dual processor board with one socket 754 and one socket 939. Go figure.

I think it is called the ASRock "K8 COMBO-Z" ALi M1689.

I don't think that board supports both processors at the same time. Just one or the other.

Right, it's meant to let you buy a cheap 754 CPU now and upgrade to 939 later on the same board.

for Socket A sempron does it even MATTER? Its just a AthlonXP with inflated PR points....

Yes, the're inflated, but they overclock well and are hecka cheap. I could get dual 3000+ equivelant for about the same price as one. Worth it just for the multitasking side of things.

Aren't the mobiles a better deal with unlocked multipliers? Obviously a dual AXP mobo isn't going to have much in terms of FSB speed, but the ability to up the multiplier is a nice asset to have.

Hmm. Dual Socket-A Mobile Sempron MPs, what a crazy and ingenious idea! But wouldn't dual Barton XPs be a better choice, as the Semprons only have 256KB L2, right? Especially in an MP config, more cache helps a lot. Not sure what the price differential is on those right now though.

I'm pretty sure dual mobile bartons have been done already. 2cpu.com

yea, when i was messing with my bridges there were instructions for making em mp too:p should be possible. and probably more justified considering the added cost of mp board. last i checked semprons cost as much as the xp's, just with inflated ratings:p
