Dual screen setup - need help displaying Windows XP on my TV!

I'll try and be brief. My video card is a NVIDIA P162 GEFORCE MX440 VIDEO CARD AGP

In the past, I have used the S-video port (with RCA adapter) in a dual view setup with my TV. I recently reinstalled Windows XP and now I can't get the secondary display (the TV) to work correctly. I just get a bunch of black & white lines moving up the screen (looks like bad reception/static on a TV).

The weird thing is that the TV displays everything fine during the bootup process, including the loading screen with the Windows XP logo. Full color and everything. It's when Windows actually starts that the TV freaks out.

Another weird thing is if I use nVidia's TV setup Wizard and select "Span," the image on the TV actually stabilizes. But I am forced to keep a low resolution on the monitor (which wasn't the case before I reinstalled XP), and as soon as I make any other changes the TV goes back to freaking out.

I really want to use "Dual View," and I know it's possible with what I have, since it worked fine before. Any ideas??

The TV has a maximum resolution and it sounds like you are exceeding it. Likely you have to set it to 800x600 or 1024X768 unless its a HDTV or something.

Im not positive of Nvidias tool but it looks like the span option syncs the resolution. In the normal display settings in windows you can set resolutions independently. (High for monitor\lower for TV)

Yes, in span mode I checked the resolution... Display Properties listed the desktop as a single monitor with 1600x600 resolution (basically just taking two 800x600 screens and adding them together).

So "span" sets both displays at 800x600. However if I go back to Dual View and manually change the TV to 800x600, I just get the garbled wavy lines again.

Also, in the past I could set the TV resolution as high as I wanted, and it would still show a stabilized image. Most of the desktop would be cut off the screen, but the image was still stable and usable.

Id say ignore the nVidia software and just open up the display properties, go to settings and you should see both monitors listed. Select number 1 (which I assume is your monitor) and set it to the right resolution then click on number 2 and set its resolution to 800x600 and make sure the "extend my windows desktop onto this monitor" checkbox is checked.

Im not familiar with the nVidia software to help you but what you want to accomplish can be done simply in Windows.

Hmm, well I was working with the normal Windows display properties for the most part. Basically I used the nVidia software to switch from clone to dual view, and from there I proceeded to do what you suggested in the normal Display Properties. I will try again though, and try to involve the nVidia software as little as possible.

If this doesn't get me anywhere, I suppose I will try downloading some older drivers. Not sure how frequently nVidia updates those, but I'm pretty sure it had been a least a year since my last video driver update.

yup... went into nVidia's driver archive and installed an older one. I've got my TV in fully-stabilized color now!!!
