if u have dual rej45 ports, could u get a program that uses both ports to dll from 1 server simutanously? (like raid)
 
well.. you might.. but you didnt tell us anything about a) connection type, b) OS type, c) if the server allows multiple connections.
 
yea the speed of a hdd is so much greater than dl speed... ie with my raptor i can sequential write at 48.3 mbps (passmark performance test) whereas the fastest dl speed is like what?

well if u were to dl from a server in a raid-like format, wouldn't the server also need the uploading version of the same prog? cause i really have no expirence with networks, heck i just found out what an ip adress is like 7 months ago...

Did you mean mbps or did you mean MBps? 😛
 
even 4-8 processor servers have troulbe pushing 500 megabits.

the HD and overall architecture is the limithing factor.

for home stuff forget about it - the HD is too slow.
 
inse, winxp has no network balancing software. Also unless you are paying for more then one cable modem, you wont get any more speed hooking to the same cable modem twice on your end. however if the download speeds are well below your cap, you can try a manager like getright which will connect multiple times to a server and download different sections of the file at the same time, this often helps increase overall download speed.
 
Well, if both rj45 ports connect to the same switch/hub on a busy network I doubt if you would get more performance......

One more thing, you might want to consider firewire networking - if you are plugging direcly into the server (and both server/client support firewire) get a 6-pin to 6-pin cable, should cost abt $3 bucks here.

-dll- what do you mean by that?

If you mean combine the two ports in to one virtual port, YES it can and has been done.
 
You can combine many ethernet ports into one - the network card and switch it is attached to have to support it however. Cisco's Etherchannel and the standard Link Aggregation are the technologies used - as long as the NIC/Switch support it. The nic does it at the driver level so the OS only sees one network interface.

The problem is the load balancing algorithyms used don't help a home network - it still only uses one link because the load balancing occurs at layer 2 or three to select the link. so if the conversations are between only one client and server, it is still only sent over one link.

If you want top performance, get gigabit ethernet.
