Dual processor - winxp or win200pro

I have a dual processor machine running on win2000pro.
I use the machine with 3dstudio Viz and photohsop mostly, and quite heavily... ie with two copies of viz running as well as photoshop simultaneously...
I was wondering if winxp would perform better under this multitasking workload? As it is, win200pro seems pretty damn sluggish sometimes... (especially basic interface things like explorer)

any suggestions ( except that I should not work with so many apps open!) appreciated!

cheers

How fast are the CPUs and how much RAM do you have? More than likely RAM is your bottleneck, as 3D Studio VIZ AND PhotoChop are RAM hogs.

I would say 2K cuase XP's ugly interface is a major turn-off on a workstation machine... and if you don't need USB and dont' play games, I'd say NT cause 2Ks ugly spruced up interface is a major-turn-off on a workstation... :)

the kernels in XP and 2K are so similar that changing from one to the other shouldnt make a noticable differance. If you have good (and recent) hardware and have already done performance troubleshooting (drivers, services, optimization, etc.) than it's possible it could be a problem with your install.

The VMs in them seem quite different, or atleast they're tuned differently. XP would thrash the disk on large file copies and 2K doesn't, this makes a huge difference on my laptop where the drive is slow as sh!t.
