At the moment I'm running Win2K sp3 with KT133A mobo and Athlon XP. I'm thinking abt upgrading my mobo to a AMD MPX based chipset (for dual processor). Issit possible to do so wihtou having to format my hard drive and clean installing the os? as I felt so lazy to do so :(

Can I:
1. Use sysprep.exe and do no installing
2. No need to format, just reinstall win2K over the existing one

because from what i heard, winNT uses different .dll files for a single processor computer and dual processor computer. thanks in advance ;)

No need to reinstall. Just change the computer type in Device Manager and reinstall SP3 after it copies what it wants from your W2K CD.

You don't need to run sysprep.exe, that only rebuilds the SID's. You only need to use sysprep if you are duplicating the OS to another computer (using and imaging program such as Ghost). This insures the computers have unique SID's.

You'll just have to go through setting up the new drivers... though PNP takes care of most of it, there may be a few odd drivers you have to install (usually comes with the mobo on CD).

To change it to 2 processor config, open up System Properties > Advanced > Environment Variables. Look under system variables and you'll see "Number of processors". Just change that to 2. That's it.

I don't know what bozo means by "Change the computer type in device manager". (As far as I know), there's nothing to set in the hardware device manager for your situation... ?

After all that, do what bozo said and run SP install again.

Hope that helps.

While you can certainly get away with just removing all the old devices before switching out boards, it would really be much happier if you did a clean install of everything (especially if you're going to get a second processor).

I think I "went dual" the same time I upgraded hard drives, so I ended up running Sysprep. After I changed the HD controller drivers to "standard," everything else was a breeze. I think I did it for both 2K and XP, as I had them both installed.

If you have SP3 slipstreamed into your CD, there should be no reason to install SP3. www.windowsxp.nu, I think.
