I am planning on dual processing and I was wondering if I can use two of these. And is there any connection between the number and wheter or not you can use two of them (i.e. with the 142 you can't dual process, but with the 246 you can)?

AMD Opteron? Processor Model Numbers and Features Comparison

That is a nice budget setup you are planning on :) I recently bought 2 242s but put them in the MSI Master2-FAR since it allows some overclocking and included both CPU coolers.

BTW Monarch has the same price on the 242s but a longer standard warranty on OEM. The 242s I bought are same week CGs that are less than 100 chips apart off the line, I don't know if Newegg will be able to do that or not, just an FYI :)

Thanks so much, after looking at that MB I decided to use it, because it comes with fans+heatsinks, you can over clock and it is cheaper!

Mine has been running the 242s@1.725ghz solid for over a month now with SETI BOINC 24/7. There are many who have had trouble with this board though, so if you want to see the issues encountered have a look at the official thread here you will find the Tyan thread there as well, so you can peruse the problems reported with it :)

Forgot to mention that I run this system with a True430w since it takes regular ATX PSUs. That saved me some more money :)

AFAIK, the MSI board is the only Opteron board that allows limited overclocking. It doesn't have an AGP/PCI lock, so you may only be able to overclock your CPU's by 100-200mhz, but even that is better than nothing. I used to have this board paired with a couple of 246's, which I overclocked to 2.2 (248 speeds), using ClockGen. It wasn't stable above that, though.

Looks like a solid setup. FYI The coolers are uberloud on full speed so enable smartfan in the bios so they will be much quieter and only ramp up if the system reaches the temp you pick. You can also put different fans on them if you want; The info is in the thread I linked.
