fujitsu m2915q (2.1 gig)scsi 2
sony sdt2000 tape drive

I do not have much personal experience with BSD, but from what I understand it is the more robust of the two, and is supposed to be better suited for a pure server envoironment. What are you planning on doing with the box? It would make a great print/file server and could also be used as web server etc. Linux would most likely be the easiest install. Depending upon your *nix experience I would recomend either Redhat(or Mandrake) or Slackware. If you are fairly experience in unix and esp. linux Slackware would be a great choice. Otherwise, stick with RH or Mandrake. Slack is not a terribly difficult distro to install, but, it does require a little more knowledge of the linux internals to configure everything. Hope that helps.
PS Why can't I ever " find" anything like that ?

Do you go dumpster diving or did you just see this in a dumpster? Great find, can't believe compainies just throw stuff like this out when they could give it to schools or churches and get a write off in the process.

NO, i dont make it a habit of dumpster diveing.
i just take a walk around the city, a differant way home each time.
unless i'm beat; then i take a cab.
and yet again while walking down park ave @ 25st. i saw a dumpster and right at the top was an acer altos 900 server sans hd's and memory but: hx chipset p200 cpu, on board adaptec 2940uw, onboard video.
now if i can just find a free moment to learn an *nix to set up a dns server etc.

Well, BSD has much better SMP support than the current stable 2.2 kernels.

If you already know Linux, than why not take the dive into BSD?
