Dual OSes?!.....How?....Why?... Some stupid newbie questions....

I saw in the poll for OS that some people have dual OS on the same computer?! Is this possible? Doesn't that violate at least one of the laws of nature?

OK,... why would you put 2 memory hogs like an OS on one computer? Don't they conflict with each other? How would you install the 2nd without overwriting the first?

Assuming everything above is do-able and easy, how do you know 98SE is running your games and not Win2K?

Sorry for the stupid questions. It just sounds like cats and dogs getting along (against one of the laws of nature).

EDIT: This isnt meant to be rude, just a little sleep deprivation and humour, i was goonna return now and properly explain about what you were asking. BUT - i was serious about using the search to see what it came up, cause then you can look at a far wider range of posts on the subject, which i think is better than just this one thread.

Ok, im gonna be lazy and tell you to use the ' search ' facility.

My reasons are threefold:
1. Its 3am and im going to sleep.
2. Im really not sure if your taking the piss or not.
3. Theres been about a million recent threads asking the same stuff, so theres a lot of info 'out there' in the big bad world of the Anandtech Forum Operating Systems category.

😛

PS - sorry, im tired, ive got exams, and......you know how it is. I'll reply more fully tomorrow if you need 🙂

Dual boot doesn't mean that both OSes are running at the same time. You choose one or the other at bootup. So instead of going straight into Win98, for example, you can choose between Win98, Win2k, Linux, etc.

As for overwriting each other, they are installed on different partitions. Like Win98 on C:\, Win2k on D:\.

I'm not gonna be quite as rude as robg170 is, but there is alot of information out on this. It is quite easy to do actually and very useful. For example I run Win98SE and redhat linux on my home computer. I'm in linux most of the time since its not a ram hog and stable. But sometimes I need to use windows only apps or games. When I do I reboot and a screen will come up (Bootmagic, by the same people who brought you partition magic) and will let me select which OS to load.

Soybomb, i wasnt trying to be rude, it was meant as a little bit of humour, though i do see why you didnt see it that way. I did explain why i didnt go through everything, and i was indeed gonna get up and do a proper post, consider then other one history. I apologise i you took offense, wasnt intended.

LOL. IamDavid, I clicked that link thinking I was gonna learn something ... then it started looking familiar. 🙂

Hopefully, I get an update on that soon (been saying that for months now).
